Match Reports

1st xv V Llandaff North : Lost 20-9
The side started with some of the players missing from the last weeks or so and after a five mins we were ahead by a drop goal from captain P Smith, we then had to absorb some pressure from the North before they were awarded a penalty to level the scores, The tyrch's fought back again & again before half time and with two penalties from the boot of M Bean we were looking good for the half time lead of 3-9. The second half saw us lose a lot of early ground and some injuries to players saw us concide a try in the corner 8-9, more pressure from the home side lead to a further two tries and a con to make the end score 20-9.
Well done boys as you have really entertained us over the past season with some open play essecially in the past 3 months with 6 wins a 2 draws and only yesterdays loss since mid Jan
We are now looking forward to a better start to the season next year, with a challange for the title and promotion!

1st xv away to Ferndale. Drew 24-24

1xv were at Ferndale for their first visit and what a memorable one it was for those supporters who travelled up the Rhondda valley. There was a supporters coach and a good time was had by all who made the effort to go, Ferndale club looked after everyone in a very friendly way with food for all who returned to the club and lots of banter about rugby, we look forward to seeing them again next season.

The whistle blew to start the game, Ferndale lost possession after some 30 seconds and then the Tyrch’s started to play some very attack minded plays, only to see a pass being intercepted and Ferndale scoring under the posts and converting 7-0 down in 3 mins, this was the story for the next 15-20 mins with all the penalty decisions going against the boys and a further charged down kick which saw the Ferndale centre score in the corner. Coach A Rosser could not believe what was going on, and then after some words to the side, the Tyrch’s started to play the sort of game that has been played over the last weeks run of 5wins and a draw, after a couple of line outs wing forward D Ince scored for M Bean to convert, straight from the kick off we attacked the home side again and this saw No 8 J Steele scoring a great follow up try after a break by the loose forwards, again converted by M Bean, score now 14-18, more pressure was put on the home line which saw Ref Mr C Tapper awarding a penalty try after a early tackle on one of our players, Bean converted to see us 21-18 up, Ferndale steadied their ship just before half time and a further pen saw halftime score 21-21. The second half was quite a dull affair with lots of mistake being made by both teams, a further pen by both side saw a 24-24 draw which has helped Ferndale stay in league 4 south east for next season,

Clifynydd - 19th April

Won 20-3

Despite going 0-3 down in the first minute of the game the Tyrch's carried on from last week with a further spirited performance from the pack, which saw a J Steele score from a pushover, then there was lots of pressure on the visitors line before the ref gave a penalty try before half time. 12-3. second half continued in the same manner, with lots of pressure but a very firm defence saw us kept out continuly, a P Smith penalty after some 15 mins increased the lead to a more comfatable one and the pleyers seemed to relax and this saw a phase of good passing and attacking. P Smith made a break some 30m out and weaved his way to the line to see the score at 20-3 and a further fine win.

Next Week, there is a coach going to Ferndale for the supporters, leaving 11.30 am (MU v Chelsea) on the box at Ferndale clubhouse, It will leave Ferndale at 18.00hrs to rtn to the club. There is a list on the board, if you intend going please insure that your name is on there

Llandaff North - 12th April

10-10 draw

Firsts were all over the league leaders for most of the this closely contested match, first try by the ever improving J Steele from a push over by a very good tight and very motivated pack, Llandaff north replied with a penalty and a try under the post before half time, the score at H/T was 5-10.

The 'Tyrchs then went on the defensive for the first ten mins of the second half, with the opposition missing a couple of penalty's, from a long throw in by L/N  flanker D Ince gathered the ball to race up the touch line, then passed in side to C Moss who scored a try to make the score 10-10

If we had a kicker on form on the day, we could have beaten them by some 20-30 points as we missed at least two tries during the game from missed passes and last minute tackles.

The club would also like to thank Carpet Services for their continued support and sponsorship.

Next week the 1st are home to Cilfynydd, which is the last home fixture for the Firsts

Pentyrch RFC – Match Report: Sat 5th April 2008 – Taffs Well (Away)

TYRCHS WIN 2nd DERBY OF THE YEAR!

On a windy day Taffs Well won the toss and elected to play with the very strong wind and kicked a penalty after 15 minutes to go into an early lead. Pentyrch defended well and after a driving maul Craig Moss burrowed over after 30 minutes. Mark Bean missed the conversion from wide out into the wind.

The Pentyrch pack were getting on top in the scrums and the lineout jumping and throwing were excellent.

Taffs Well kicked a second penalty before, captain Phil Smith went over for another unconverted try for Pentyrch after 38 minutes following a scrum against the head. On the stroke of half time Huw Griffiths went over for a third try after a good handling move – again the conversion failed to leave the half time score at 15 – 6 to Pentyrch.

Taffs Well stiffened up their pack in the second half and took one against the head but Pentyrch drove up to the line firstly to score from a 30 yard penalty by Mark Bean and then through a very good try by Chris ‘Beefy’ Allen and a four try bonus point after 56 minutes – but still no conversion.

For the last 20 minutes Pentyrch had to defend against a driving maul game by Taffs Well which saw them score two converted tries – one after 62 minutes and one after 86 minutes – to get back to within three points. Surprisingly the referee played a total of nine and a half minutes of extra time in the second half but the Pentyrch defence held out for a deserved four tries to two victory. We thus gained our ninth victory of the season and our third double and the retention of the John Llewellyn Cup against old rivals Taffs Well.

This result, our first four try bonus point game, takes Pentyrch to 40 points from 18 games and in a comfortable mid-table position in National Division Four South East.

Saturday 29th March: home v Barry

Pentyrch 13 Barry 10

Barry arrived at the Parc expecting to carry on from their home win last week against Cefn Coed 37-7, well the Tyrchs thought better and within 5 min were ahead from a try by G Eyres which saw M Bean taking a high kick from Barry running some 30 m passing to Eyres who ran 25m for a try in the corner, with the weather turning for the worst the Tyrchs then spent most of the first half defending their line against a very determined pack, Barry scored two trys during this period and the score at half being 5-10. In the second half we saw some early defending again for the first 10 min's then a break by the forwards and some slick passing the Tychs second try was scored by G Eyres score now 10-10. the rain and wind got worst as the time went on and mistakes were made by both sides, then an off side against Barry on the 22m line, saw B Davies (captain) kick the deciding penalty for the winning score.

Saturday 22nd March :

The game against CHSOB, was a very good win of 15-8 to the tyrchs, the forwards were the key to the match with the them playing against a much heavier 8, the front row led the way with a dominating performance, Rebut Rhys Thomas from the youth was everywhere and caused they half backs a lot of problems, the score could have been a larger margin if only a few of the passes & knock on,performance had gone to hand, overall a very tidy performance from everyone on the field.

Good to see Jeff steel back on the park and playing some good stuff after his very long lay off for that broken leg from Apr 2006.

We hope to see the same stuff next week against Barry and follow up with a further 4 points for the league table.

4th January: Lost at home to Ferndale, 0-23.

1st xv won again at Cilfynydd by 22-13, 3 tries in first half by g eyres, d berry and a rolling maul try who scored not sure, a pen and 2 cons by h williams brought us to the 22, debuts game for Robby miles and he played very well as did the team, h griffiths and d ince and prop g hole again caused lots of problems to the home team,

Pentyrch 10 Taffs Well 3,
Was the result of the rain cancelled game from 1st Dec, played at the Parc Saturday 15th, after a fairly open 1st half the game was equal at 3-3 half time, although the tyrch should have been well ahead at this stage, but very good defence by Taffs Well saw the keeping us away from the try line on many occasions. Second half started with the tyrch deep into the opponents half which resulted in flanker Ince going over for a converted try by Anderson under the posts, determined tackling by our visitors kept us out until the ref blew for full time. Well, done boys 4 wins out 8 after our shaky start, we are looking forward to next weeks game at Cilfynydd.

1st September: Home to Llantwit Major

First XV just lost their opening game to Llantwit Major 11-12.

Not a good game as such, a couple of moments to savour except  Gareth Eyres running some 50m to score a great breakaway try and the dropped ball which L/Major picked up to score under the sticks!

Look forward to Cefn Coed away next week and hope we play a better game.
