U10's

Under 10’s Tour of the Western Territories
26th & 27th April 2008

And so it came to pass that the time for exploration & conquest drew to a close as the damp chill winds of spring receded. The Under 10’s embarked on one final quest to the farthest reaches of Warren’s empire, visiting Oakwood, Broadhaven and Llandeilo before resting their weary limbs for the Summer.

A fun filled four hours at Oakwood provided thrills, spills, and an unprecedented opportunity to squander hard earned pocket money on burgers, doughnuts, candyfloss and countless other additives, long since eliminated from the WRU’s diet sheets.

While the boys turned in early at Broadhaven, the coaches worked long into the night at the local Temperance Society rooms, planning tactics over cups of steaming cocoa & rich tea biscuits. Word was out that the local public house was hosting a Karaoke night & hen party, but the trusty management team stuck to their task, dismissing this as ‘the devils work’, or so your correspondent was led to believe….

The next morning, following a character building 85 minute coach ride through seemingly interminable A and B roads, the team, coaches, and supporters disembarked pale and pensive, at Llandeilo RFC, the light drizzle doing little to cast away lingering bouts of nausea and migraine.

A round robin had been organised, to include the hosts and neighbouring club Llangennech RFC- an ideal arrangement for the 20 strong Tyrchs squad.

1st Match
Llangennech 5 Pentyrch 15
Pentyrch Team : Ben Harrison Jones, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Aaron Tomlinson, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Sam Fenton, Henry Davies, Jack Butler, Harry Jones

Both sides began cautiously but the Tyrchs were first to make an impression with Rhys Lynch confidently spinning the ball out wide. Ben Harrison Jones went close before being driven into touch, but he was not to be denied for long. Minutes later he snatched the ball from the breakdown and galloped 20 yards to open the score.

Backs and forwards began to link well and Harry Jones came close to doubling the lead. A breathtaking sequence of play saw the ball move swiftly from Rhodri Davies Hughes to the outstanding Gwilym Rees, Aaron Tomlinson and finally Ben who touched down for another well deserved try.

As half time approached a stunning 50 yard break from Will Cole effectively sealed the match as he grounded the ball in the corner to extend the lead to
15-0.

The second half saw Lewis Evans replace Sam Fenton, and with the game seemingly won the Tyrchs retrenched to conserve energy. An injury to Ben Harrison Jones following a high tackle resulted in his being replaced by namesake Elliot, and although our boys were always in control, Llangennech managed a try to narrow the deficit shortly before the final whistle blew.

Tries:
Ben Harrison Jones 2
Will Cole

2nd Match
Llandeilo 10 Pentyrch 5
Pentyrch Team: Ben Harrison Jones, Elliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Aaron Tomlinson, Tom Burns, Sam Fenton, Rhys Powell, Nick Bowler, Chris Jones, Marcus Gallo

A bright opening saw early pressure from Aaron Tomlinson & Ethan Denty push the hosts back into their own territory. This developed into a keenly contested and often feisty encounter, and Rhys Powell became the first casualty. He was replaced by Rhys Lynch. San Fenton embarked on a number of probing runs but each advance was repelled as the fresher Llandeilo players stuck to their task. A lapse of concentration manifested itself in series of missed tackles and the hosts ran in to open the score. Sam Fenton was hurt and left the field to be replaced by Henry Davies just before half time.

The second half saw three further substitutions with Aaron, Rhodri, and Harry making way for Gwilym Rees, Owen Evans, and Will Cole.

The Tyrchs were now clearly suffering from their exertions at Oakwood [and subsequent pillow fights] and for the first time this season looked heavy legged. Another burst from the hosts saw them double their lead as our boys were, once again, uncharacteristically slow to the tackle.

Finally stung into action the Tyrchs responded: Nick Bowler leading the charge with some fearless running. First Ethan Denty went close, and then Nick himself had a try mystifyingly ruled out. Pressure yielded reward as Ethan finally broke through to score against his father’s former club. From the restart Gwilym Rees surged forward but was held up by some desperate Llandeilo tackling.

Further injuries saw Tom Burns and Marcus Gallo leave the field to be replaced by Tomos Angell and Lewis Evans respectively.

As the clock ticked down the Tyrchs were dominant. The hosts cleared their lines with a kick, but Chris Jones gathered and shook off three tacklers to touch down on the line. The ‘try’ was disallowed although television replays suggest the referee was unsighted. The hosts survived this scare, and although Henry Davies also went close, the ‘Ravens’ held out, celebrating wildly at the final whistle.

Although downcast, the Tyrchs could take great heart from their displays, and may be encouraged to seek a couple of hours more sleep 12 months hence, as dwindling energy was surely the difference between the two sides during the last 15 minutes of play.

Try: Ethan Denty

No conversions.

And finally…….

Whether you spend your Summer in Torquay, Torremolinos, or Tierra del Fuego make sure that when buying your first drink, you raise a toast to our coaches
Barney, Ian, Kelvyn, Mark, and Team Manager Phil who have worked tirelessly and selflessly over the last eight months to provide our children with the opportunity to learn & play the game to such a high standard. They deserve our admiration as well as our thanks, and the odd free drink at the Ball later this month.

U10s Tournament at Old Luctonians RFC

20th April 2008

This was an excellent tournament in respect of organisation, layout and the quality of the games. As the custom “when in Rome” dictates, the tournament was played in accordance with the English laws for under 10s;

9 aside
3 man scrums –contested
3 man lines out-contested
No kicking.

The Tyrchs had some difficulty in adjusting to the scrum contest, on several occasions they were taken by surprise at the scrums and were pushed back several yards. Towards the end of the day however they did become accustomed to the English rules and battle up front was truly joined. The Tyrchs subsequently won some ball against the head as they shunted their opponents off the ball at some of the set pieces. The handling and running skills of the whole Pentyrch squad were great to watch throughout the day and provided the basis for their success. The improvement in distribution of possession was significant and made for an attractive day’s rugby.

Squad
Ben Harrison Jones, Ethan Denty, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Mathew Stewart, Aaron Tomlinson, Elliot Jones, Tom Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Sam Fenton, Henry Davies, Nick Bowler, Marcos Gallo, Harry Jones, Lewis Evans, Owen Evans.

Group Stage
1st Game
Pentyrch 15 Ledbury 10
This was a very exciting and tough encounter with some high quality passages of play. After a couple of minutes Ledbury opened the scoring having developed three phases of play then spinning it out to the left winger who powered through for a try. The Tyrchs responded well when Sam Fenton ran from deep, fed Ben Harrison Jones who off-loaded to Elliot Jones but the Ledbury defensive cover forced him into touch. Soon after a Ben Harrison Jones drive, as always with thrust and purpose, allowed Elliot Jones to take it on and score; 5-5.

The Tyrchs by now had the journey knocked out of them and began to develop fluidity in their play. Following a Pentyrch scrum on their own 22, a switch move in the backs allowed Rhys Powell a half break. Rhys Lynch using the subsequent second phase ball took advantage of the misaligned defence and made 20 m with a jinking run. Good pressure on the Ledbury backs allowed Rhys Lynch to intercept a Ledbury pass and feed Henry Davies out wide. Tom Angell was in support and sent a long pass out to Sam Fenton who opened his account for the day to edge the Tyrchs in front.

Ledbury rallied and pressurised the Tyrchs, their strong forwards won turnover ball at a ruck and they capitalised with a short range try to level the scores. In the final minutes Pentyrch profited from hesitancy at half back, stole the ball and set Sam Fenton free to make the winning score.

Tries
Elliot Jones
Sam Fenton (2)

2nd Game
Pentyrch 0 Luctonians 0

The second game was even more tense than the first as the score reflects. The majority of the play was in the middle third of the pitch neither side being able to gain the upper hand. The Luctonians forwards were dominant in this game and created some good driving moves but their backs were unable to break down the stern Tyrch’s defence. Pentyrch’s clear chances were limited; Henry Davies almost broke free having collected a long pass from Sam Fenton but the hosts defensive cover was impressive throughout.

3rd Game
Pentyrch 60 Old Anselmians 5
This was a very open game during which the Tyrchs enjoyed running in twelve tries. The Anselmians resolve was broken early on, their defence folded and the Tyrchs ran them ragged. The Jones Brothers profited, each bagging a brace of tries. Mathew Stewart opened the scoring with a long looping run having collected a loose ball. Harry Jones scored his first try for the club after Elliot had secured spilt ball and the Tyrchs worked through the phases. Elliot then picked another loose ball and galloped unchallenged from the half way. The Tyrchs backs pressurised the Anselmians backs at a line out, the loose ball was secured. Rhys Lynch was fed by centre Rhys Powell and raced over to put the Tyrchs 20-0 to the good.

From the hesitant restart Elliot Jones secured the possession, the forwards recycled it quickly for the backs who used it well to release wing Henry Davies who scampered over. Anselmians then struck back with a well worked move up the right hand side to score a consolation try. Mathew Stewart was put clear and certain to score his second when the referee stopped the game for an injury.

Good pressure at the restart again produced turnover ball with some 15 m being made in the Tyrchs’ rolling maul. Elliot Jones then broke away on the 22 m to score. A penalty move in the backs freed Henry on the wing to race over. Aaron Tomlinson broke past several defenders before setting up neat ball for the backs, centre Rhys Powell cut inside and crossed over. Further scores followed in quick succession by Henry Davies, Harry Jones, and finally Rhys Powell as the Anselmians capitulated.

Tries
Mathew Stewart
Elliot Jones 2
Harry Jones 2
Henry Davies 3
Rhys Powell 3
Rhys Lynch

4th Game
Pentyrch 30- Builth Wells 0

The Tyrchs showed all the tempo and invention in this encounter. Beautifully timed passes and incisive breaks were too much for the “show grounders” as the Tyrchs ran in six tries with no response.

Early on Ben Harrison Jones made some hard yards setting up good ball for the backs, a break by Nick Bowler made ground on the right. The ball was again recycled and the backs sent it across to Henry Davies who finished off the move as only he can. Ben Harrison Jones was at the focal point of another pick and drive assisted by Ethan Denty, the ball was delivered quickly along the backs to Henry Davies who cut back inside off-loading to Ben Harrison Jones to power over. Nick Bowler pounced on a loose ball following the Builth restart and made a 10 m break back up to half way, forwards Rhodri Davies Hughes and Ethan Denty rucked the ball back; outside half Rhys Lynch cut inside and then raced round the defence for the score.

The lead was extended almost immediately after brilliant handling in the backs started by a superb pass from Tom Angell released Henry Davies on the wing for a try on half time.

Soon after the break following a Builth line out, Rhys Lynch up quickly on the midfield, intercepted a pass and left them for dead to complete a brace. The final try came from another lineout some 15 m out, Elliot Jones split the defence but was hauled down, Tom Angell picked up, saw a half gap on the blind side and crossed over from 5m.

Tries
Henry Davies 2
Ben Harrison Jones
Rhys Lynch 2
Tom Angell

Pentyrch went through as group winners.

Semi Final
Pentyrch 5 Brecon 10

The Tyrchs started promisingly; from a penalty Ben Harrison Jones made several hard yards, the Tyrchs then displayed great technique and discipline whilst working through five phases eventually feeding Henry Davies who passed inside to Ben for the opening score. Long periods of territorial pressure first by Pentyrch and then Brecon followed. Telling tackles by Henry Davies and Sam Fenton halted promising Brecon attacks to keep the Tyrchs just ahead at the break.

Brecon established a good attacking position and capitalised with a forward breaking from a ruck into the corner to level the scores. Ominously Tyrch’s talisman Ben Harrison Jones then withdrew injured. He was replaced by Elliot Jones. Pentyrch won a scrum against the head but the ball was spilled in the backs and Brecon were up quickly to seize possession and cross over for the decisive try. Injuries forced Sam Fenton and Rhys Powell to retire, they were replaced by Harry Jones and Marcos Gallo. The Tyrchs fought bravely in their attempt at a comeback but the game was up and they had to concede defeat.

Squad
Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Ethan Denty, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Owen Evans, Mathew Stewart, Elliot Jones, Tom Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Nick Bowler, Sam Fenton, Henry Davies, Elliot Jones, Marcos Gallo

A great effort by the squad, who adapted very well to the English rules and displayed some excellent handling and running play amongst both backs and forwards.

Tournament Winners: Rhiwbina Squirrels. Are they grey or red?

U10s District Tournament at Llandaf RFC

13th April 2008

As the Pentyrch entourage were attempting to set up camp in the lashing rain, the news permeating the team was almost inevitable; the first fixture, at this, the business end of the season was to be the squirrels!

Group Stage
1st Game
Pentyrch 0 Rhiwbina 10

As in previous meetings this was a close contest but Rhiwbina’s early pressure was decisive. Early on they took advantage of a loose ball and despatched it to their right winger who sprinted round the defence to put them 5-0 up. Rhiwbina again gained territorial advantage and pressurised the Tyrchs at a short range line out. They were awarded a penalty some 5 m out after a desperate attempt to clear the lines by the Tyrchs backs. Their forwards then powered over for the score.

After the break the contest was very even with both sides’ defence managing to snuff out the others’ attacks. The Tyrchs most notable effort was associated with a penetrating break by Will Cole. The Tyrchs defensive resolve was severely tested in the final minutes but they managed to keep the squirrels from the nuts!

2nd Game
Pentyrch 15 CRICC 0
No quarter was given for the first few minutes with both sides tackling well, Chris Jones in particular terminated a promising CRICC move with a fine challenge. Gwilym Rees drove from a penalty move and set up second phase ball for Tom Burns to go blind; Rhodri Davies Hughes then Ethan Denty took it on in turn, the backs spun it out to Chris Jones who was unlucky not to get free. Gwilym Rees and Tom Burns again combined well and their work released the hungry backs. Sam Fenton straightened the line and set up another phase to allow Rhodri Davies Hughes to pick and drive over for a try.

Early in the second half Rhys Lynch collected the ball and broke past several CRICC players before off loading to Rhys Powell who fed Sam Fenton, however smart defensive work bought the move to a halt. CRICC attempted a break but Ethan Denty was having none of it and turned possession over. Further Pentyrch pressure kept CRICC penned back in their own half. Tom Burns made a half break from a scrum and slipped the ball inside to Gwilym Rees who fed Ben Harrison Jones in support with the try line beckoning; 10-0.

Following the restart kick off the backs and forwards combined well working through three phases making good ground before Rhodri Davies Hughes broke away for his second try to seal the game.

Tries
Rhodri Davies Hughes 2
Ben Harrison Jones

3rd Game
Pentyrch 5 Rhymney 5
This was a very tense and tight affair with both sides on the brink of qualification for the quarter finals. The forward play dominated the game while the backs waited patiently for the ball. Gwilym Rees probed the midfield having collected a return ball from his line out throw. Rhymney threatened on the left wing but Sam Fenton and Henry Davies double tackled the flier into touch. Rhymney pressure was frequently repelled but eventually a forward crashed over from short range to put them ahead just before the break; 0-5.

The touchline tension increased as it became clear that a draw would put the Tyrchs through. The first few minutes of the second half were spent in the middle third of the pitch. The second of two attempts to set Henry Davies away was successful as he completed a looping run into the corner to give Tyrchs a foot in the quarter final door. Rhymney came back and the Tyrchs defence was rigorously tested. Top of the class in this respect were Tom Angell, Gwilym Rees and Nick Bowler displaying great defensive mettle.

Pentyrch qualified for the quarter finals as Group Runners-up.

Quarter Final
Pentyrch 10 St Peters 5

Both sides gave away turn over ball in the early moments as the nerves surfaced. The Tyrchs backs put a great move together to release Sam Fenton who left the despairing defence to put them ahead 5-0. The lead was extended immediately when the Tyrchs gathered the kick off and set Henry Davies on a dancing run from his own 22 to make it 10-0. The game was far from over however, St Peters pounced on a loose ball and raced over for a try to keep them in touch.

After the break both sides probed but sound defence meant that Tyrchs were able to hold on to their one try advantage to put them through to the semis.

Pentyrch Tries
Henry Davies
Sam Fenton

Semi Final
Pentyrch 0 Llandaf 5
Promising early moves involving Henry Davies and Ethan Denty almost gave the Tyrchs the advantage but then Llandaf then broke out and spent the rest of the first period in the Tyrchs half. The decisive moment came when, in brave attempt to spin it wide near their own line, a Tyrchs pass was intercepted and Llandaf went ahead just before half time.

After the break Pentyrch had an early chance when Will Cole made some 15 m and almost broke the covering defence. Tom Angell’s tackling thwarted another Llandaf attack and Henry Davies almost cut free. Chris Jones replaced the injured Sam Fenton. The Tyrchs threw everything they had in their final attempts but the Llandaf tackling was good enough to protect their slim lead.

Squad
Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Will Cole, Tom Angell, Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Nick Bowler, Sam Fenton, Henry Davies, Chris Jones

As we have come to expect the whole squad played with heart and commitment throughout the day, none of the games were easy and the Trychs can hold their heads high in the district. The tournament winners were the Rhiwbina Squirrels.

Pencoed U10s v Pentyrch U10s
6th April 2008

This was the Under 10’s final fixture before the start of the festival season and a stern test was anticipated, given the illustrious and well deserved reputation of the hosts whose former juniors include Messrs Henson, Gibbs, Cooper and Thomas.

Sixteen players reported for duty and the coaches elected to play two matches ensuring sufficient game time for all.

1st Match Pencoed 35 Pentyrch 14
Pentyrch Team : Ben Harrison Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Joseph Miles, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Chris Jones, Henry Davies

The early exchanges suggested that this would be a fascinating contest. The forwards gave no quarter and the backs showed excellent handling skills, and a willingness to spread the ball across the field. The Tyrchs took the game to their hosts confidently and after 5 minutes a Ben Harrison Jones drive provided forward momentum which enabled the pack to switch play out to the right wing, where Henry Davies’ pace almost yielded a try before he was felled by a last ditch tackle as he darted for the corner.

The game settled down as both sets of forwards sought to gain the ascendancy. Will Cole and Joe Miles were outstanding as they repelled the steadily advancing Pencoed pack and having wrestled the ball, and the initiative, the Tyrchs struck back: Tomos Angell spun the ball out to Rhys Powell close to the halfway line and a clever pass released Chris Jones who sped down the left touchline to score in the corner. Rhys Lynch added the conversion to put the vistors 7-0 up.

The hosts’ riposte was immediate, but the fearless tackling of Joe Miles and Rhodri Davies Hughes kept them at bay, until a well worked switch opened up a gap at the 22 which was ruthlessly exploited by the home outside half who jinked through to score a try which was subsequently converted.

Pencoed moved up a gear, maintaining pressure on the visitors, but with Ben Harrison Jones in uncompromising mood, they could find no immediate way through. However, having won turnover ball the Tyrchs were penalised as they tried to break out from their 22 metre line. The Pencoed pack surged through and although they failed to ground the ball, the Tyrch’s relieving kick bounced free and was seized by the hosts’ winger who extended the lead, touching down after an electrifying break. The conversion was added as the half time whistle blew.

Second Half Substitutions: Tom Burns for Tomos Angell, Ethan Denty for Rhodri Davies Hughes

The game developed into a familiar pattern - strong forward play epitomised by excellent support work at the fringes, and quick, accurate handling by both sets of backs. Eventually the home side’s unwavering focus gave them the edge and from a 5 yard penalty they drove over to push the score to 21-7. At this point Rhys Powell left the field, injured, and was replaced by Nick Bowler.

Both teams continued to demonstrate high levels of skill and concentration as the ball moved through several phases of play. Ethan Denty & Aaron Tomlinson were prominent for the Tyrchs, constantly foraging at the rucks, and Rhys Lynch’s kicks relieved pressure when the hosts got too close to the try line.

As the game moved into the final quarter Pencoed added two more tries, profiting as the Tyrchs contrived to lose the ball through uncharacteristic handling errors. Nevertheless the hosts were unable to relax and quick thinking by Joe Miles at the line out set up an excellent move involving Rhys Lynch Chris Jones and Henry Davies.

Fittingly it was Joe Miles who, from the final move of the match, fed Will Cole whose flicked pass set up Ben Harrison Jones who strode the final 10 metres to score, with three home defenders trailing in his wake. Chris Jones added the conversion to cut the final deficit to 35-14.

Second Match: Pencoed 28 Pentyrch 7

Pentyrch Team: Joseph Miles, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Gwilym Rees, Ethan Denty, Matthew Stewart, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell Henry Davies, Lewis Evans

The home team exerted early pressure and Rhys Lynch, Rhodri Davies Hughes & Gwilym Rees all needed to be on their mettle to maintain parity. As in the first game, the Tyrchs hit back on the counter attack, as Ethan Denty fed Joseph Miles who drove through for a richly deserved score which Rhys Powell converted.

Back came the hosts, taking root in the Tyrchs 22, but their advance was stymied by some sterling work form the excellent Joseph Miles. Once again, having seemingly weathered the storm, the visitors hit back and Rhys Powell fashioned a gap for Lewis Evans who took the ball to within 10 metres of the try line before being hauled into touch. From the ensuing line out it was Pencoed who turned the tables, spinning the ball out wide for the backs to create a superb converted try which levelled the scores.

Ben Harrison Jones returned to the pitch replacing the injured Jo Miles and the half time whistle blew with the scores even.

Second Half Substitutions: Tom Burns for Tomos Angell, Aaron Tomlinson for Rhodri Davies Hughes, Nick Bowler for Rhys Powell, & Chris Jones for Henry Davies

The third quarter of the game saw the Tyrchs punished for a series of missed tackles which they could ill afford, given the reputation and ability of their opponents, and these lapses in concentration saw the deficit widen to 21-7.

To their immense credit, the boys came back strongly with some brave probing runs from Tom Burns, and fierce defensive tackling from Gwilym Rees, Ben Harrison Jones, and Will Cole who had returned to the pitch in place of the injured Ethan Denty.

However, as the clock ran down there was little anyone could do to quell another lightning break from the hosts whose slick handling enabled them to cross for a final try.

It is often the wont of defeated sides to lament the fact that score lines do not always truly reflect the run of play. In this case there can be no doubt that Pencoed deserved their hard fought victories, but perhaps what the statistics do not reveal is the high level of skill, commitment, and endeavour shown by both teams in delivering what was an outstanding hour of entertainment - arguably the best match of the season so far. Ideal preparation for the forthcoming tournaments and tour- so ‘roll up’ ‘roll up’!

Pentyrch U10s 47 Sully Sports U10s 14
9th March 2008

A leisurely Sunday morning mobilisation for a home fixture was a welcome prospect for the U10s entourage. The Pentyrch micro climate however reminded us all what we had been missing these last few months. Periods of breezy sunshine gave way to searing artic blasts throughout the morning for the visit of Sully Sports.

The contest was played over three fifteen minute periods. Although the winning score was emphatic, it does not tell the full story. Sully Sports played uphill for two of three periods and were in touch until the third. The visitors arrived with a squad of 12 players and proved stiff opposition for the majority of the encounter, only fading as they tired and tackles were missed. Until then they played some good rugby and their defence was well organised, time and time again marshalling the Tyrchs attackers into touch.

The telling feature of the game was spoiling of opposition possession at set pieces, good communication between players, and very few handling errors.

1st Period

Pentyrch having won the toss took the advantage of the slope in the first period. Their pressure soon established a position in the Sully 22, as an attempted break out was foiled by the Tyrchs who stole possession in a maul. Joe Miles took it on, crossed the gain line and the ball was then sent to the wide left, and then via another phase to right wing Chris Jones who was tackled just short of the line. Sully were awarded a penalty and despatched a forward drive, but Ben Harrison Jones powerfully directed the carrier into touch.

The Tyrchs forwards spoiled Sully line out possession and again stole the ball from a maul. The ball passed through the quick hands of Rhodri Davies Hughes, Joe Miles, Ben H J, and released Tom Angell but covering defence forced him into touch 5 m out. Pressure on Sully’s line out ball led by Aaron Tomlinson reclaimed possession for the Tyrchs, the ball was spun along the backs in open play to Tom Angell and he managed to squeeze in at the corner to make it 5-0.

The Tyrchs gathered the restart and displayed some good inter-passing involving backs and forwards. From a scrum on the half way a dummy switch move allowed Henry Davies a half gap but he was tackled into touch. From the ensuing lineout Pentyrch pressure forced a handling error in the Sully midfield and the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum in a prime attacking position. Ben Harrison Jones, standing, off received the ball and, as we have seen so many times this season, was irresistible from 8 m out. Rhys Lynch converted.

From the restart the ball was set up for Joe Miles to break away, the backs took it on but a toe in touch brought the move to an end. Inevitably by now the Sully line out was under pressure; however they were awarded a penalty at the breakdown. They fed the forwards but the Tyrchs fronted up and possession was turned over. Aaron Tomlinson picked up and made a half break before feeding Ethan Denty who was held on the line, successive attempts to cross the whitewash by Chris Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes were held up by the rallying Sully defence. Sully then won turnover ball and threatened to cut loose, but a double tackle by Chris Jones and Tom Angell ensured the Tyrchs 12 points remained unanswered at the end of the first period.

2nd Period

Sully started the second period with territorial advantage, and their outside half made a good break before being forced into touch in the Tyrch’s 22. From the line out outside half Rhys Lynch, seeing the flat defensive line, fired a long kick to take the play almost up to the Sully 22. A scrum was awarded to Pentyrch but Sully pounced on a loose ball in midfield, and cut loose breaking tackles in a strong running move to score. With the kick, the deficit was reduced to 5 points.

Gwilym Rees was up quickly to pinch possession from under the Sully noses at the restart kick, the ball was swung out to Tom Burns who just ran out of space on the wide right. A forward advance form the Sully lineout was terminated by a telling tackle from Jack Butler on the wing. The sustained Pentyrch pressure was eventually rewarded when Ben H J picked up from the base of a ruck 10 m out and pushed the despairing tackles aside to make a decisive score. Lynch added the two points.

Pentyrch again prospered from the hungry work of Gwilym Rees at the restart when again he snatched possession, and Marcus Gallo on the wing almost cut through. Sully were gathering some momentum but on one occasion good smothering tackling in the backs drove them back almost 15 m, and soon after centre Harry Jones made a break out of defence. Harry was injured in his efforts and was replaced by Rhys Powell. Sully were awarded a couple of penalties in quick succession allowing them to establish a position 6 m from the Tyrchs’ line. At the line out the home pack held the advance but a pick and drive from a Sully loose forward earned the visitors a well deserved try. The conversion made it 19-14.

3rd Period

It was nip and tuck in the first five minutes of this period which was spent entirely in the middle third of the pitch. Joseph Miles then made several hard yards and set up 2nd phase ball near the right hand touchline. Tom Burns sniped on the blind side and fed Gwilym Rees, but the defence was having none of it. Pentyrch were awarded a penalty at the breakdown, possession from the forward drive was taken on by Rhys Powell at outside half but he was held just short of the line. Sully attempted a break out from a penalty but Harry Jones’ tackle was decisive and set up turnover ball which was spun out to Chris Jones. Another phase was recycled for Gwilym Rees to advance, and, to order, the ball was distributed along the backs to Henry Davies who scampered over for the try. Chris Jones converted.

Tom Angell replaced scrum half Tom Burns and the Tyrchs again pressurised the visitors at the kick off through an all encompassing drive with Owen Evans and Elliot Jones prominent. However Sully managed to retain possession and threatened in midfield until Tom Angell put paid to their ambitions with a great tackle. Pentyrch pressure on the Sully line out again reaped benefits when Ethan Denty stole possession and fed Joe Miles for the break, Ethan in support collected the return pass and crashed over for the try. The extra points were added by Chris Jones.

The fatigue in the Sully camp was beginning to show when Joe Miles gathered from the kick off and made a bullocking run though the midfield. However, desperate covering defence forced him out. From the line out the scrum half targeted the blind side but Tom Angell dumped him into touch.

Marcus Gallo and Jack Butler replaced wingers Chris Jones and Harry Jones. Sully’s defence was creaking as they tired and the territory in the final minutes was all black and white. Joe Miles picked up from a 5 m scrum and crashed over for his first try which he duly converted. Ethan Denty, sensing the pickings, collected the restart kick and powered through several would-be tacklers for the final try. For the first time this season Rhys Powell was handed the kicking tee and he made no mistakea resulting in a final score of 47-14.

Glamorgan Wanderers U10s v Pentyrch U10s
2nd March 2008

Phil Angell subconsciously hummed the melody to ‘On the Road Again’ as, clipboard in hand, he counted up the Pentyrch squad before they embarked on the journey to their 10th consecutive away fixture

From hilltop to valley, suburbia to sea side, their schedule since October would surely have provided Michael Palin with sufficient material for a six part documentary, as this weekend it was the turn of Glamorgan Wanderers to host the Pentyrch Nomads.

21 players reported for duty last Sunday morning and the coaches, recognising the potential difficulties of rotating the squad through a single game, selected two teams, each of which played against a virtually unchanged home team of just 13 players. This posed potential difficulties for both sides, as we shall see:

1st Match Glamorgan Wanderers 0 Pentyrch 5

This turned out to be a titanic affair which would doubtless have appealed to those rugby connoisseurs who wistfully recall halcyon days when matches were often won by a single score, and tries were as rare as dentists’ waiting lists or sub-prime mortgage portfolios.

The Wanderers were quickly out of the blocks kicking for position purposefully. Their forwards were strong and well organised, putting the Tyrchs under immediate pressure. A swift break saw the home team move the ball to within a hairsbreadth of the corner flag, and a certain try was averted through a stupendous tackle from Sam Fenton.

The Tyrchs woke up with Ben Harrison Jones leading the pack, taking quick line out ball and gaining 20 metres before being hauled down. The backs now started to stretch the home defence but the Wanderers frustrated several breaks before stealing turnover ball and regaining territorial advantage. Rhys Lynch helped lift the siege with a couple of well placed kicks as gradually the Tyrchs secured parity, and then a measure of control, driving their opponents back slowly but surely.

An attempted break by the home side was ended by a magnificent Jo Miles tackle, reminiscent of Gavin Henson’s superbly executed demolition of Matthew Tait in Grand Slam Year. Inspired, the boys slowly gained the upper hand and were rewarded as Tomos Angel set up his forwards, for Will Cole to force his way through from 5 metres to open the scoring.

The Wanderers came back strongly and Ben Harrison Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, and Gwilym Rees fronted up well, absorbing pressure and constantly harrying their opponents. There was limited opportunity for the backs to utilise their pace but Henry Davies and Chris Jones made intelligent contributions, gaining valuable yards before setting up the forwards for further incursions into the home territory. Rhys Lynch and Sam Fenton were constantly in the thick of things, eventually setting up Jo Miles who, following swift interplay with Rhodri Davies Hughes, released Ben Harrison Jones who was forced into touch just as he was about to double the try count.

As half time approached Henry Davies appeared to have sealed a second score but was caught 10 metres out. Chris Jones kept the move alive but was dragged to the ground short of the line.

Sadly Sam Fenton was forced off through injury and Nick Bowler replaced him just prior to the whistle.

Second Half Pentyrch Substitutions: Aaron Tomlinson for Rhodri Davies Hughes and Tom Burns for Tomos Angell

The game developed into a compelling battle, with both sides in turn gaining territorial advantage but seemingly unable to create sufficient momentum to score. Although possession was dominated by the forwards, the Tyrchs backs supported their colleagues well at the breakdown and through a series of energy sapping rolling mauls which required no little skill and immense concentration.

Relief appeared at hand when the Wanderers lost the ball at a line out 5 metres from the Tyrchs line. Rhys Lynch seized the opportunity and embarked on a superb touchline run before being tap tackled just 5 yards out, Chris Jones in support accepted the pop ball but a last ditch covering tackle denied him the try.

Back came the Wanderers, their forwards again looking for a weak link in the visitors defence. Time and time again the Tyrchs forwards repelled their advances with Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson and Jo Miles outstanding.

Tom Angell rejoined the fray as Tom Burns suffered an injury, and with the clock running down the Tyrchs kept the ball tight, gradually forcing their way back downfield.

The whistle blew to general relief- a hard fought contest had been won through a combination of teamwork, composure, and the occasional glimpse of grace under pressure.

Second Match – Glamorgan Wanderers 30 Pentyrch 5

The home team fielded an unchanged team for the second match & this clearly worked to their advantage – they were raring to go and had already developed a clear understanding of their game plan before the restart. They tore at the Tyrchs from the kick off and it needed powerful tackles from Jack Butler and Elliot Jones to keep them at bay. Eventually pressure created an opportunity and the Wanderers touched down in the corner to open the score.

Three more tries followed in the ensuing 15 minutes but the Tyrchs stuck to their task. Ethan Denty and Tomos Angell worked tirelessly, and the backs were willing to try and move the ball wide when the opportunity arose. Lewis Evans and Owen Evans epitomised the team spirit- Lewis almost breaking through from an interception, and Owen securing momentum for his pack from a clever pick up.

The boys conceded a fifth try on the stroke of half time, although credit is due to the hosts whose score resulted from a superb break involving all 5 backs.

2nd Half
Pentyrch Substitution: Tom Burns for Tomos Angell

The Wanderers pushed hard from the restart and seizing on a moment’s indecision in the Tyrch’s ranks, extended the lead to 30- 0.

Lesser sides would have folded but with great courage and commitment the boys came back strongly. The forwards began to gain valuable territory through a series of well worked mauls, and pressure was suitably rewarded as Rhodri Davies Hughes drove through a mound of bodies to score.

Further injury deprived the Tyrchs of Mathew Stewart who was replaced by Ben Harrison Jones, but momentum was maintained. Ben nearly scored again from a 20 metre break as the team gained in self belief during the final phases of play.

A tough match and clearly difficult for our boys to respond quickly against powerful opponents who had already ‘played themselves in’ during the first match. Great credit is therefore due to the Tyrchs who, in the second half, matched the Wanderers in terms of try count and developed in confidence as the game wore on.

Conclusion

After the ‘try fests’ of recent weeks this was probably just the sort of fixture the boys needed as the festival season looms ever closer. The forwards in particular deserve tremendous praise for keeping the ball alive, gaining territory and facing up to often uncompromising opponents, without loss of composure or concentration. With better weather and firmer pitches ahead the portents are good.

A special mention for the referee, Mr Miles, who once more delivered a master class, in the face of unwanted [and unwarranted] advice from the touch line.

And finally…

Congratulations to Henry Davies!

We all knew he was the quickest at Pentyrch, but Henry demonstrated his mercurial pace on the biggest stage- winning a sprinting race against over 40 boys from the other regional teams at the Arms Park during the half time interval at the Blues v Munster Magners League match. Well done Henry- we are very proud of you!!

St Josephs (Newport) U10s 28 Pentyrch U10s 47
24th Feb. 2008

And so eastwards onto the Gwent Levels for an encounter with our regional neighbours. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for them, St Josephs squad was limited to eight players. As is the custom, the Tyrchs coaches offered players to enable the home side to field a complete team. The degree of the generosity was perhaps less customary in that some of the Tyrchs most powerful forwards swapped their black and white stripes for the yellow and green of St Joseph’s. The effort expended on behalf of the hosts by Ben Harrison Jones, Joe Miles, Elliot Jones, Lewis Evans, and Jack Butler did them and the club credit, and was also a significant factor in creating a competitive contest.

The match was played over four periods and although St Joe’s gained brief ascendancy in the second quarter, ultimately there could only be one winner. For extended periods Pentyrch demonstrated good skills and discipline in working through the basics of recycling ball and releasing the backs. Neat, fluid passing movements and organisation at the breakdown was the key to success in this game. A pleasing spectacle for the spectators and, no doubt, satisfying for the coaches.

1st Quarter

The game started promisingly for Pentyrch with some good handling in the backs. A half break from Rhys Powell early on stretched the defence; covering tackles dislodged the ball which Henry Davies harvested before scampering round the defence to score in the corner. Sam Fenton added the kick.

Soon after the restart the backs again made good progress using line out ball. Sam Fenton was held but Elliot Jones took it forward until solid defending from St Joe’s forced him into touch. Pentyrch were awarded a penalty near half way, and the quick thinking Rhodri Davies Hughes took it sharply and made 20 m before being held. The ball was set up for the backs who used it well to release Sam Fenton with Aaron Tomlinson in support, but St Joe’s halted the attack and won turnover ball. The home side rallied with some good inter-passing but solid tackles by Will Cole and Henry Davies kept them penned in their half. Eventually the Tyrchs regained possession and neat passing involving all five backs released Sam Fenton who crossed over to make it 12-0. From a penetrating kick St Joe’s pressurised the Tyrchs and won a line out 8 m from the try line. Their pack worked well as a unit to drive over, which with the conversion reduced the deficit to 5 points on the stroke of half time.

2nd Quarter

St Joe’s backs used the ball well early in the second quarter. A telling tackle by Marcus Gallo brought their winger down but the ball was recycled and ringer Ben Jones Harrison broke away to score his first try for a Gwent side. The conversion put St Joes in front by two points. St Joe’s gathered the restart kick with great purpose as they mounted another attack, and it was Jack Butler’s turn to make a crucial tackle but, as previously, they reworked the ball and their outside half, after cutting inside with support, was able to cross over. The conversion made it 21-12 to the home side.

St Joe’s were beginning to gain momentum and the Tyrchs defence was rigorously tested. Strong tackles were required of Ethan Denty, Mathew Stewart, Will Cole and Owen Evans to keep them at bay. The hosts were effective in recycling their possession though the phases and eventually ringer St Joseph Miles broke away to score. The conversion put them 28-12 ahead. St Joes appeared more organised in this period and they had the lion’s share of the territory. A low penetrating charge from Gwilym Rees advanced the Tyrchs some 15 m but resolute St Joe’s defence maintained their advantage.

3rd Quarter

Pentyrch rallied in this decisive period of the match with neat and accurate passing enabling them to gain the upper hand. From the kick off they won a scrum 3 m out; swift passing saw the ball transferred to the left wing and, after the breakdown, to right wing Henry Davies, who finished off the move with his second Try. Sam Fenton converted. Soon after the restart Aaron Tomlinson and Sam Fenton gained several yards before setting up second and third phase ball respectively. Scrum half Tom Angell fed Rhys Lynch who span out of one tackle and held off another to score in the middle. Lynch added the kick to put the Tyrchs within two points.

Pentyrch used the restart possession well as they worked upfield through several phases involving all the backs and forwards. St Joe’s defence was brave but at 5m out Ben Harrison Jones ripped the ball free from the maul and scored his first Pentyrch try of the day to edge the Tyrchs in front. Sam Fenton converted. The home defence was creaking as, almost immediately, the Tyrchs again established a good position and Ben Harrison Jones powered his way over for a short range try. Rhys Lynch added the points

Late on Gwilym Rees pierced the defence with a good quick penalty drive, Tom Burns made a half break releasing Henry Davies, but desperate tackling kept him out.

The final try came from another good backs move that set up second phase ball some 5 m out. From there, the unstoppable Ben Harrison Jones completed his Pentyrch hat-trick with a characteristic drive, flanked by desperate tacklers. Chris Jones converted to seal the match at 47-28.

Llantwit Major U10s v Pentyrch U10s
17th February 2008
Llantwit Major 0 Pentyrch 36

‘Far have I travelled, and much have I seen’ opined Paul McCartney [when the word ‘Heather’ doubtless evoked more tranquil memories] and although the Under 10’s forthcoming fixture with Mull of Kintyre RFC is still unconfirmed rumour, the sentiments expressed in the song surely echo the boys’ recent experiences as they notched up their 8th consecutive away fixture last Sunday.

Fifteen players assembled but the squad was unfortunately reduced by two withdrawals before kick off as Ethan Denty and Nick Bowler succumbed to illness. The contest was restricted to two ‘halves’ with the Pentyrch coaches rotating players carefully, to ensure a suitable balance.

1st Half

Pentyrch Team : Ben Harrison Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Joseph Miles, Elliott Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Sam Fenton, Chris Jones, Henry Davies

In cold and windy conditions it took both sides a little time to settle but after five minutes of sparring the Tyrchs seized the initiative as Llantwit failed to leverage advantage from line out ball close to their 22 metre line. Jo Miles and Aaron Tomlinson burrowed in to secure turnover ball, setting up a well constructed forward drive from which Ben Harrison Jones stretched through to score the opening try which was converted by Sam Fenton.

Kicking downhill, with the wind at their backs, the home side tested the Pentyrch defence from the restart but drew a confident response: Rhys Lynch made an excellent break from his 22, releasing Henry Davies who sped over the half way line before being edged into touch. Llantwit lost the ball from the ensuing lineout and Tom Angell leaped in to pick up and cut through the despairing tacklers to score a classic scrum half’s try which extended the lead to 12-0.

Once more Llantwit, urged on by their coaches, attempted to breach the Tyrchs defence but their momentum stalled as they foundered on well timed tackles from Chris Jones and Elliot Jones. Turnover ball once again provided the catalyst for an emphatic response, with Pentyrch now camped in their opponent’s half, as Ben Harrison Jones fed Rhodri Davies Hughes who opened his account to increase the lead to 17-0.

Pentyrch Substitutions: Marcus Gallo & Owen Evans for Chris Jones & Aaron Tomlinson

Now firmly in control, the Tyrchs looked to extend their advantage as half time approached. Elliot Jones & Ben Harrison Jones constantly harried the home defence and the ball moved steadily upfield. Pressure yielded reward when a quick break from the scrum saw Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, and Sam Fenton combine superbly before releasing Joe Miles who ran 20 yards, breaking through several tackles to score a richly deserved try which he also converted.

2nd Half

Pentyrch Substitution: Gwilym Preest for Rhys Lynch

The advantage was soon extended as another trademark break from Sam Fenton created space for Rhodri Davies Hughes to waltz through the home defence to claim his second try, stretching the lead to 29-0.

Pentyrch Substitution: Aaron Tomlinson for Ben Harrison Jones

Llantwit were anxious to secure some reward from this increasingly one sided contest but Aaron Tomlinson and Owen Evans kept them at bay, aided by some excellent driving from Rhodri Davies Hughes. [Jo Miles was injured in a ruck and left the field briefly to be replaced by Ben Harrison Jones].

Pentyrch made two further substitutions with Chris Jones and Rhys Lynch returning to the field for Henry Davies and Sam Fenton as the game gradually wound towards its conclusion.

Although never a fractious affair, the penalty count increased significantly in the latter stages as the referee imposed his authority. Ultimately this led to a more fragmented contest with neither side seemingly able to release their backs without risk of infringement. Nevertheless Marcus Gallo made headway on the wing and, when required, both Elliot Jones and Gwilym Preest helped maintain the Tyrchs’ defensive line.

It was Joseph Miles who rekindled the spark by taking clean line out ball, puncturing a hole in the tiring home defence, and finding Rhodri Davies Hughes whose strength and persistence were rewarded as he broke through to seal a fine hat trick of tries. Jo Miles converted to push the score to 36-0.

Llantwit pressed hard as the game drew to a close but the Tyrchs defence held firm until the final whistle blew.

The game was effectively won in the first half and in that context the second period was perhaps understandably lacklustre. In the circumstances this was another convincing win which could have been more emphatic had the Tyrchs been able to maintain their free flowing momentum in the last 20 minutes. That said, persistent infringement slowed the game down to a pace which was ultimately dictated rather by whistle than will.

Merthyr Tydfil U10s v Pentyrch U10s
10th Feb. 2008

On a sun-baked February morning in Merthyr- that’s worth repeating- On a sun-baked February morning in Merthyr the U10s had probably their toughest game of the season so far in terms of the challenge they faced and the way they reacted to it. It is said that the most rewarding sporting contests are those in which the outcome is in doubt for 80% of the time – this was one such occasion and the whole squad can feel very proud of what they achieved in doing their bit to ensure that the Tyrchs won the Merthyr – Pentyrch Mini and Junior Challenge Cup.

Merthyr put the Tyrchs under tremendous pressure in many areas of play by strong running, hard tackling and determined spoiling. Pentyrch’s superior forward play eventually dominated and proved the decisive force that won the day. The backs were under pressure in the first game but eventually gained some rhythm in the second to show that the squad has talent throughout.

The team work improved as the contest went on and the Pentyrch effort was epitomised by the final try in the second game when the pack in a well controlled driving maul made 20 m for the winning score. Ben Harrison Jones’ contribution was immense as he led the Tyrchs to victory in both games.

1st Game
Merthyr 10 Pentyrch 15
The first game started well for Pentyrch when Ben Harrison Jones picked up a loose ball and the backs quickly transferred it to Henry Davies out wide near half way, Henry rounded the defence and raced over for a try. Merthyr came back quickly when a strong runner collected a spilt ball and broke through the defence to level the scores. There followed some good Pentyrch attacking moves worked through several phases but Merthyr managed to spoil the possession with some extremely fast work at the fringes. Quick ball from a lineout on the Merthyr 22 allowed Rhys Lynch to feed Sam Fenton who, with a trademark jinking run, split the defence and scored. Chris Jones terminated a promising Merthyr attack with a crucial tackle on the wing. Sam Fenton suffered a worrying injury in a double tackle and was replaced after the break by Nick Bowler.

The second half saw the Tyrchs awarded a scrum V. Merthyr defended well and halted a Ben Harrison Jones charge then they broke out from defence and threatened to go all the way but a try saving tackle from Will Cole kept the Tyrchs in front. Merthyr continued to gain ground and were forced into touch only 3 m out. They were quickly up to pressurise Pentyrch ball, charged down a clearance kick and pounced to make it 10-10.

Merthyr spilled the ball from the restart and Pentyrch took the advantage and gained a scrum 5 m out. A scrum move looked promising but the home defence was again solid to deny Henry Davies. Chris Jones nearly pierced the defence with a side stepping break but was forced into touch as the Tyrchs enjoyed a period of pressure. Pentyrch pressurised Merthyr’s line out ball, Will Cole ripped it free and smashed through the defence for the decisive score.

Pentyrch ended the game working through the phases up the touchline, with Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees and Joseph Miles showing some great rucking and mauling skills directed from the base by Tom Burns.

2nd Game
Merthyr 10 Pentyrch 15

Pentyrch were beginning to settle into a rhythm in this game and enjoyed much of the possession in the first half. Will Cole and Gwilym Rees made some penetrating breaks but Merthyr’s defence was organised and solid. The home side broke out a couple of times but great tackles by Rhys Powell and Nick Bowler saved the day. Good distribution in the backs freed Marcus Gallo on the wing but he was tackled into touch 5 m short of the try line. Following a line out Merthyr exploited a gap up the touchline and with good support play scored the first try in the corner. Aaron Tomlinson spoiled Merthyr’s lineout and secured ball for the backs, Rhys Powell made a great half break but desperate tackling dislodged the ball before he found open ground. At half time Merthyr had the one try advantage.

When Merthyr failed to secure the kick off the sharp Gwilym Rees dived to secure the ball, Ben Harrison Jones took it on and with the sweetest of sidesteps wrong footed the defence before touching down to make it 5- all.

The Pentyrch backs were functioning better and Rhys Powell again broke the line with two feigned passes before putting Marcus Gallo free, a great covering tackle however forced the winger into touch. Jack Butler on the other wing also nearly broke the defence with a strong run up the line. Pentyrch took the initiative after Gwilym Rees collected ball from a line out and made some hard yards before the pack arrived, they drove him on then Rhodri Davies Hughes peeled away with the ball to score his first try. Aaron Tomlinson replaced the injured Will Cole.

From a line out on half way the Merthyr outside half ran diagonally across the defence line, held off tacklers and made it over in the corner to make it 10-10. Soon after the No. 10 fancied his chances again he but hadn’t reckoned on Ben Harrison Jones who floored him with a mighty covering tackle. The forwards were working very well at this stage and they started another driving maul some 20 m out. The control and team work displayed as they went all the way, allowing Rhodri Davies Hughes to seal the match with his second try, was a fitting climax to the Tyrch’s efforts under the Merthyr midday sun.

We are happy to report that Sam Fenton is now on the mend.

Congratulations to all the mini and juniors on winning the Pentyrch - Merthyr Challenge Cup.

Llandaff North U10s v Pentyrch U10s
3rd February 2008

Llandaff North 7 Pentyrch 38

History does not record precisely where Don McLean was when he penned the line ‘February made me shiver’ immortalised in his classic 1972 anthem American Pie, but a visit to Llandaff North RFC last Sunday morning would have provided suitable inspiration.

It was a bitterly cold day and although, mercifully, dry, conditions were difficult and to their credit both teams rose to the challenge, delivering an entertaining and rousing spectacle for the committed band of supporters.

With both sides arriving with squads of around 15 players, the coaches wisely decided to play a single match, split into three periods of play and ensuring appropriate game time for all.

1st Period

Pentyrch Team : Elliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Sam Fenton, Chris Jones, Henry Davies

From the outset this had the hallmarks of a close encounter and Llandaff started confidently. However, strong early tackles from Gwilym Rees and Aaron Tomlinson [playing against his former club] broke the home side’s rhythm and inside two minutes Tom Burns and Rhys Lynch combined to release Sam Fenton who gained valuable yards, but was unfortunate to see the ball scrambled away by the home defence. The Tyrchs soon regained possession, and this time Rhys Lynch fed the ball to Chris Jones out on the right. He was bundled into touch just short of the line but pressure was soon converted into points when following an infringement by the Llandaff forwards Lynch flicked second phase ball to Sam Fenton who sped through a narrow gap to touch down before confidently adding the conversion.

Llandaff pressed hard from the restart with a series of strong forward drives but Henry Davies relieved the pressure, seizing on a loose ball before speeding 20 yards up field. Support arrived swiftly and a clever switch involving Sam Fenton & Aaron Tomlinson released Elliott Jones who powered through for a richly deserved try which Rhys Lynch converted to stretch the lead to 14-0.

With their tails up the boys extended their lead before the break: Ethan Denty Will Cole & Gwilym Rees harried the Llandaff forwards, and having won possession, they released Rhys Lynch who spotted a gap and jinked through the despairing Llandaff tacklers to touch down for an excellent try in the right hand corner. Sam Fenton converted to push the score to 21-0.

2nd Period

Pentyrch Team: Elliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Tom Angell, Sam Fenton, Rhys Powell, Gwilym Preest, Marcus Gallo

The scoreline did not fully reflect the intensity of this encounter and as Llandaff stirred themselves for a revival, Ethan Denty & Elliott Jones were both on their mettle, repelling the home team’s advances. Having weathered the early storm the Tyrchs responded with stealth, a trademark drive ending with Llandaff being penalised for a high tackle. From the resumption, the ball was fed to Gwilym Rees, who with characteristic zeal, forced his way through the home defence to score, extending the advantage to 26-0.

Llandaff drove forward from the restart and the Tyrchs were indebted to Will Cole for securing turnover ball and relieving pressure with a searing run downfield. The home defence were harried whenever they tried to clear their lines with Rhys Powell & Marcus Gallo relishing the challenge. Will Cole suffered an injury & left the field to be replaced by Aaron Tomlinson who slotted in seamlessly. Inevitable gaps began to appear in the Llandaff ranks, and this time it was Rhodri Davies Hughes who seized the initiative, storming through to widen the margin to 31-0.

3rd Period

Pentyrch Substitutions: Rhys Lynch, Jack Butler, Chris Jones, Henry Davies, Marcus Gallo, Tom Angell, Elliott Jones, Gwilym Preest, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tom Burns,

The third period saw Llandaff respond well, gaining in confidence as they recycled ball through several phases of possession. Jack Butler & Gwilym Preest put in some strong tackles but the home side’s tenacity was rewarded when, mid way through the final session of play, they broke through the Tyrch’s defence to score a converted try, reducing the deficit to 31-7.

Pentyrch were to have the final word and were soon on the front foot once more, the backs combining well to score, although the ‘try’ was correctly ruled out for an earlier infringement. Llandaff were being penned back close to their line and although a towering kick from their fly half appeared to have cleared the danger, Chris Jones read the position well, taking the catch before setting off on a run and breaking through the home defence to score the final try which he then converted.

This was a good all round performance against well drilled opponents with a strong pack. The result is all the more creditable taking into account the extreme cold which made handling especially difficult. A true ‘squad’ effort was suitably rewarded and it is particularly pleasing to see the growing confidence of the newest recruits Elliot Jones, Jack Butler, Marcus Gallo, and of course Aaron Tomlinson who will be delighted to have tasted victory against many of his former team mates.

Cowbridge U10s v Pentyrch U10s
27th Jan. 2008

The Tyrchs were indebted to Llanishen RFC for “organising” this fixture on a neutral ground to enable them to make a long awaited start to the second half of the season. All those pleasant evenings at the winter training camp reaped benefits in terms of skill levels maintained and commitment to the cause.

The two games in their different ways exhibited some very pleasing characteristics, swift and accurate passing, good support work, neat off loads, searing breaks by the fliers, and, in no little measure, dogged defence and determination.

Great credit must go to Cowbridge who turned up with a squad of 15 and played four games in quick succession, the first two against Llanishen. They showed a high level fitness and great character in sticking to the task all morning, and well past lunchtime.

1st Game
Cowbridge 0 Pentyrch 40

The first game was characterised by good passing, great combining play between forwards and backs and occasional long range breaks by the wingers.

Pentyrch, playing uphill, soon pressurised Cowbridge and forced a 5 metre scrum. The ball was swiftly transferred to Sam Fenton on the wing who made good ground but was held. Second phase ball was secured, Joseph Miles picked up and crashed over to open the scoring within 2 minutes. Stern defence brought the second of Sam Fenton’s breaks to a halt but the Tyrchs were awarded another scrum at close range. Tom Angell fed outside half Rhys Lynch on the short side and Sam Fenton took it on to score near the corner.

Cowbridge then enjoyed a period of possession and managed to threaten the Tyrchs’ line but hard defence kept them out. Pentyrch used a penalty well when they spun the ball out to Henry Davies who left the defence floundering with his blistering pace to score the third try. Cowbridge responded well with some strong running testing the Pentyrch defence over a sustained period but the Tyrchs were again equal to the task. Another Pentyrch penalty move released Henry Davies on the wing and he scored his second just before the break.

Early in the second half a penalty allowed Cowbridge to launch an attack but resolute defensive work put paid to their ambitions. The Tyrchs secured second phase ball and spun it out to Henry Davies who made to within 8 m of the line. Cowbridge won turnover ball but their clearance kick was well fielded by Sam Fenton who cut through the oncoming hordes and fed Nick Bowler in support who crossed over for a try.

The injured Tom Angell was replaced at scrum half by Tom Burns.

Pentyrch piled on the pressure down the hill and established a position a couple of metres out. Rhodri Davies Hughes, hungry at the breakdown, picked up and drove over for try number six. From the restart Ben Harrison Jones secured a loose ball and set up a ruck, Will Cole picked up and set off on a 50 m sprint for his score as Cowbridge resolve was beginning to falter. Good work at the breakdowns by Gwilym Rees and Rhodri Davies Hughes help to provide more possession for the backs. A brief breakout by Cowbridge was terminated when the winger was tackled simultaneously into touch by the determined Nick Bowler and Sam Fenton.

Following a line out on half way Rhys Lynch broke on the short side and made 20 metres, Ben Harrison Jones in support took it on and made it over the line to complete the scoring as the game drew to a close.

2nd Game
Cowbridge 10 Pentyrch 15

The second game saw both teams put in dogged performances in one of the closest encounters of the season. It was nip and tuck all through the game and the Tyrchs did well to come through on top albeit by the narrowest of margins.

Cowbridge started brightly and forced some strong tackles from Mathew Stewart, Elliot Jones, and Ethan Denty. Elliot made several meters out of defence before being held, Marcos Gallo took it on, and then Matthew Stewart left the despairing defence is his wake as he sprinted some 40 m for the corner to score.

Cowbridge responded with strong running in the forwards and backs, eventually their left winger broke some tackles and managed to cross over in the corner. From the kick off Cowbridge again pressurised the Tyrchs but a strong tackle from Ethan Denty floored the determined attacker.

Aaron Tomlinson made a driving break through several defenders before being held. A neat switch move in the backs released debutant Jack Butler on the wing but he was forced into touch by strong defence. Another great drive form Aaron Tomlinson established a good position for the Tyrchs. The Tyrchs were then penalised for a series of infringements at breakdowns which allowed Cowbridge off the hook and they reached half time on even terms.

From the kick off a penetrating break from Ethan Denty was curtailed by strong Cowbridge tackling, second phase ball was secured a couple of metres out and replacement scrum half Tom Burns was quick to exploit the gap for a close range try. Cowbridge soon came back again with a blind side move from a scrum 20 meters out to draw level.

A sustained period of play in the middle third followed with neither side dominating. Good tackling both from both sides nullified attacks, Harry Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, and Owen Evans made important tackles for the Tyrchs.

Pentyrch won ball from a maul just inside the Cowbridge half, Sam James took it on and powered through holding off the tacklers to make the winning score. Cowbridge made a valiant effort in the final minutes but good defence from Matthew Stewart and Ethan Denty kept them out to secure the win.

Treharris 7 Pentyrch 75

Name that tune (the clue is in the first two words).

Away in Treharris
one freezing cold day
on a purpose–made small pitch
Pentyrch went to play.
The forwards were rampant
to the fore Ben H J
and the backs used their ball well
to seal the day.

The two Toms, Nick and Aaron
in turn played their part
on-the-wall was the writing
from the kick at the start.
Home tackling was lowly
but what can you do?
when a Tyrch sees a half-gap
he has to run through.

Improvements in the 2nd half
Treharris they made
and managed some pressure
before they did fade.
Their scrum-half, from a set piece,
broke for their only score
but Pentyrch responded with a
“We’ll have some more”.

Ben HJ had four tries
Joe Miles added two
Rhodri D H another
to tighten the screw.
Two tries for Sam and Henry
from long distance runs
all but one kick went over
can you do the sums?

Now Gwilym and Ethan
made several hard yards,
and whilst rarely needed
Tyrchs’ tackling was hard.
A Rhys to Rhys switch move
was a joy to behold
and with that, all you 10s squad,
this story is told.

Rhydyfelin U10s v Pentyrch U10s
25th Nov. 2007

Rhydyfelin 12 Pentyrch 49

A delayed start awaiting pitch availability allowed more time than was necessary for all assembled to appreciate the glorious autumn morning, and afternoon, a short distance up, and almost on, the A470. The conditions provided ideal for expansive rugby and the Tyrchs did not disappoint. The quality of possession supplied by the forwards was at times excellent and the swift passing in the backs allowed the visitors to score some very good tries. Pentyrch established an unassailable lead in the first period, Rhydyfelin did respond well however in the following two periods and Pentyrch’s defence was tested on several occasions. It was only broken down by two individual tries by the Rhydyfelin outside half whose skills deservedly got him on the score sheet.

1st Period

A good follow up from the Pentyrch kick off put Rhydyfelin under pressure from the start and forced them to concede a penalty five metres out. Ben Harrison Jones was fed by scrum half Tom Angell from the tap, he accepted the offer with his customary determination and powered through. Chris Jones converted.
From the restart tap Pentyrch tackled well and won turnover ball, swift and accurate passing in the backs set Henry Davies free on half way, he left the defence floundering as he raced to the corner. Rhys Lynch added the two points.
Soon after, good handling again allowed the Tyrchs to establish an advance position and they were awarded a penalty some 10 metres out. The ball was spun out quickly along the backs and Henry Davies again finished off the move. Joseph Miles planted the conversion.

A good pressure relieving kick from Rhydyfelin was well fielded by Tomos Angell, second phase ball was set up, taken on by Rhodri Davies Hughes and Henry Davies to within 5 meters of the line when a home side injury halted play. The Tyrchs had the restart scrum, Ben Harrison Jones at stand off again broke the gain line but was held, Will Cole in support then broke away from the maul for his first try of the day. Chris Jones made no mistake with the kick.

Rhydyfelin then enjoyed some territory and possession for the first time. Good tackles from Tomos Angell, Rhodri Davies Hughes, and Henry Davies however put paid to their ambitions. Will Cole collected a loose ball on the touchline and broke out of defence and although held, set up second phase ball, good support from the forwards allowed the Tyrchs to gain several metres. Will Cole then reclaimed the ball, ripped away from the maul and powered over to score his second. Rhys Lynch converted to make it an impressive 35-0 at the break.

Pentyrch
Ben Harrison Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Will Cole, Joseph Miles, Aaron Tomlinson
Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Chris Jones, Henry Davies

2nd Period

Rhydyfelin came back well in this period, much of the play was spent in the middle third of the pitch with neither team being able to gain the upper hand. Good drives by Gwilym Rees, Ben Harrison Jones, and Harry Jones made some hard yards but the home side defended well. Rhydyfelin asked some questions of the Tyrchs defence and Nick Bowler was amongst those who tackled well to keep them at bay. The home side eventually got on the score sheet when their outside half sold a dummy on half way, split the Tyrchs’ defence and raced over for a try which was subsequently converted.

From the restart Pentyrch pressurised the home side and drove on to within 10 m of the line. Elliot Jones charged down a clearance kick, gathered the ball and was unlucky not to score as he was edged into touch.

The Tyrchs’ single try in this period came from a well worked line out move 5 metres out when hooker Gwilym Rees fed Joseph Miles at the front. Joe dropped his shoulder and took a couple of tacklers over with him to the corner, he then picked himself up and slotted over the kick.

3rd Period

Early Pentyrch pressure forced Rhydyfelin to lose the ball over their own try line. From the resulting scrum Tom Burns fed Ben Harrison Jones at stand off and good support from the rest of the pack helped Ben over for the try. Rhys Lynch converted. Rhydyfelin’s outside half made a couple of incisive breaks but on both occasions Henry Davies produced the sort of tackles that have made his reputation. The home side No. 10 however eventually broke through to score his second try in the corner. The conversion attempt unfortunately came back off the underside of the bar.

Pentyrch again made good ground from the restart with Owen Evans to the fore in this drive. The ball was spun out to winger Sam James who showed great strength as he made 20 metres along the touchline carrying a couple of defenders with him. Rhydyfelin’s defence was however resolute at this stage of the game and they managed to deny the visitors the final say.

St. Peters U10s 21 Pentyrch U10s 21
18th November 2007

A silent majority of the Under 10s parents sat glued to their PC screens early on Sunday morning waiting in vain for an e-mail from the Team Manager to tell them that this fixture had been cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. So it was, at 10am, a convoy of vehicles set off for the gates of St.Peters praying for brief respite from the torrential overnight rain and arctic South Westerly wind.

Given the circumstances, the two teams contributed admirably to a fascinating encounter, and although the Tyrchs were denied a victory in the final seconds of this intense contest, the boys should be immensely proud of the way they played, ignoring the elements to serve up another exciting and utterly compelling 60 minutes of rugby.

The coaches elected to play a single match in three phases, which, once again, provided ample game time for all, and reduced the incidence of hypothermia.

1st Period

The Tyrchs pressurised their opponents from the kick off, as Rhys Lynch kicked deep into St.Peters’ territory. Gwilym Rees used the ball cleverly and sucked in the home defence before releasing the ball for the backs to edge closer to the try line. A penalty was awarded for an infringement and the Tyrchs probed forward through several phases, before recycled ball was fed to Rhys Lynch whose timely pass enabled Rhodri Davies Hughes to break through with a ‘trademark’ try. Sam Fenton converted to put the visitors 7-0 up.

St. Peters came back strongly and the Tyrchs did well to repel their advances. Sam Fenton and Aaron Tomlinson kept the home side at bay with fine tackles, but eventually a sustained forward drive from the Rocks’ heavyweight pack enabled them to draw level through a converted try.

Back came the Young Turks, as, first Sam Fenton and then Rhys Lynch went close, but just when it looked as if St. Peters had managed to weather the storm, Nick Bowler picked up and raced downfield to score an excellent solo try in the right hand corner. Sam Fenton again added the conversion to secure a 14-7 advantage at the end of the first period.

Pentyrch Team:
Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Matthew Stewart, Ethan Denty, Tom Angell, Rhys Lynch, Sam Fenton, Nick Bowler, Henry Davies, Chris Jones

2nd Period

The Tyrchs started brightly with Rhodri Davies Hughes making a scintillating 40 yard break. Although the pack was hard on his heels eventually the home side used their weight to secure possession and responded impressively, racing downfield to restore parity with a converted try. Marcus Gallo then joined the fray, replacing Dafydd Dodson who had been injured during the preceding move.

There followed a period of intense forward pressure as St.Peters sensed an opportunity to edge in front. Determined tackling from Ethan Denty & Mathew Stewart held the line, supported by a series of well timed relieving kicks from Rhys Lynch. As the second phase of the match drew to a close Harry Jones made a superb break from a pass by Rhys Powell, and was unlucky not to notch his first try for the club.

Penytrch Team:
Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Matthew Stewart, Ethan Denty, Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Dafydd Dodson, Harry Jones, Henry Davies.
Substitute: Marcus Gallo

3rd Period

This was developing into a classic ‘nip and tuck’ encounter as both sides did their utmost to gain the upper hand. First Rhodri Davies Hughes went close following a break, and then Sam Fenton leapt at full stretch to force the St Peters’ Centre into touch, just as a home try seemed inevitable.

A triple substitution saw Chris Jones, Rhys Lynch & Tom Angell return to the pitch. Ethan Denty won turnover ball, and released Chris Jones in the centre who evaded two tackles before being pulled to ground. The Tyrchs kept possession gaining 20 yards through a rolling maul, and although the Rocks eventually clawed their way back to pressurise the visitors’ try line, Henry Davies broke through and sprinted 70 yards to score a beautiful try in the corner. Chris Jones converted to restore the 7 point advantage.

St. Peters responded swiftly and although a break from Marcus Gallo provided further evidence of the Tyrchs’ pace behind the scrum, as the clock ran down it was the home side that enjoyed territorial advantage. At the last, a forward drive saw them close to within 2 metres of the Pentyrch line, and eventually burrow their way through to score a hotly contested try. To much jubilation, the home outside half kicked the conversion to level the match.

If the final try felt like rough justice, in truth this was probably a fair outcome, with the home side enjoying a marginal territorial advantage. Their reaction at the end of the game says a great deal about the reputation the Tyrchs have developed this season, and there is no doubt that this match will have done a great deal to broaden the experience of our Under 10s. They played with great commitment and once again demonstrated strong handling skills, which given the inhospitable conditions, was no mean achievement.

Fairwater U10s v Pentyrch U10s
11th Nov. 2007

Fairwater 15 Pentyrch 55

The limited space provided by the short and narrow Fairwater pitch determined that the opportunities for expansive back play were restricted in this contest. The forwards scored eight of the eleven Pentyrch tries and, as no posts were available for conversions, the backs’ opportunities to get on the score sheet were limited further! The Tyrchs had territorial advantage for the vast majority of the game which was played over three fifteen minute periods. Fairwater were indebted to their half backs on several occasions for good relieving kicks out of defence that turned the visitors on their heels, but the well drilled Pentyrch forwards secured enough quality possession which they used to great advantage to secure another emphatic victory.

1st Period

Playing downhill Pentyrch started with great purpose and scored four tries in the first five minutes to establish a commanding lead. A powerful drive from Ben Harrison Jones from second phase ball some 10 m out provided the first try. Soon after Ben Harrison Jones standing off a scrum broke the gain line, Joseph Miles took it on and, not for the first time demonstrating strength beyond his years, drove over to score taking the despairing defenders with him.

The third try came when Chris Jones accepted a pass on the left wing and broke back inside, he was caught but the secured second phase ball allowed Rhodri Davies Hughes to pick and drive breaking through some determined tackling on his way to the line. From the restart Pentyrch defended well and won turnover ball, the forwards made considerable ground before Will Cole then broke away from the maul to make the score 20-0.

Fairwater then began to enjoy some territorial advantage. They were rewarded when a back, on a looping run, outflanked the Pentyrch defence to score in the corner. Pentyrch responded well when Joseph Miles was fed from a scrum a short distance out, good support from the forwards advanced the move and allowed Rhodri Hughes Davies to pounce on a loose ball for his second try. Pentyrch continued to recycle possession well and following a third phase of play Will Cole again displayed strong running, shaking off would-be tacklers for his second try.

The Tyrchs backs established another good position after Rhys Powell threw a great dummy to split the defensive line, however good Fairwater cover held up the attack on the try line. Pentyrch were awarded a scrum-five. In a now familiar and effective move, scrum half Tom Angell fed Ben Harrison Jones standing off who strode over for the score.

Pentyrch
Ben Harrison Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Will Cole, Joseph Miles, Aaron Tomlinson
Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Chris Jones, Sam James

2nd Period

Pentyrch started well up the hill pressurising the home side. A good Fairwater clearance kick was fielded deep by Henry Davies who then made some 40 m before being held; he was well supported at the breakdown and the alert Rhodri Hughes Davies pounced again to complete his hat trick. The home side began to develop some better positions in this period and both Henry Davies and Aaron Tomlinson were amongst those called on to halt attacks with fine tackles.

Following up yet another effective clearance kick from defence Fairwater regained possession a few yards out, good support from their forwards inched them over the line but the score was rightly disallowed for some optimistic, but unsubtle, crawling at the base of the ruck.

A good move from a centre field scrum saw outside half Rhys Lynch break the gain line and, when held, execute a good off-load to Rhys Powell who sprinted in for the try. Henry Davies completed the scoring in this period having collected the ball out on the wing following good handling in the backs to make it 50-5.

3rd Period

The final period was a scrappy affair as the game was allowed to deteriorate. Although several penalties were awarded many more may have been given. The visitors were punished for lapses in concentration by two tries scored from quickly taken penalties. The tiring Tyrchs did well not to react to some poorly targeted tackles. In addition great resolve was displayed to halt the individual attacks of one or two very powerful Fairwater players as the game drew to a close. Fittingly however Pentyrch had the last word when Henry Davies sprinted 40 m for a try setting the seal on another away win.

Pentyrch U10s v St. Albans
4th November 2007

There are encounters in all sports where the final result belies the essence of the contest. This was no such occasion, as the Under 10’s swept aside their opponents, scoring a deluge of tries in a sparkling pre-bonfire night performance illuminated by graceful running, confident handling, and solid tackling.

Pentyrch assembled a squad of 15 players, and the coaches agreed to play two full length matches, which provided adequate game time for all.

1st Game – Pentyrch 69 St. Albans 0

The Tyrchs got off to a flying start, when following a forward drive; Will Cole released Chris Jones, who evaded two tackles to touch down in the left hand corner. Sam Fenton added the conversion with just two minutes on the clock.
From the restart Jo Miles & Gwilym Rees drove forward. St. Albans were caught offside, and from the resulting penalty Ben Harrison Jones surged forward, driving through the hapless defence to score the first of his double hat trick of tries.

Excellent forward work from Aaron Tomlinson created yet another opportunity, and Sam Fenton gratefully accepted the ball, weaving his way through the St. Albans’ pack to score. Chris Jones converted to stretch the score to 19-0.

Although the away team’s forwards were physically strong, the Tyrchs’ technique nullified their potential threat. Well timed tackles and intelligent play in the loose continued to pay dividends, as a brave Rhys Powell’s tackle set up Ben Harrison Jones who raced 40 yards to touchdown.

Sustained pressure brought further reward, as both Henry Davies & Chris Jones went close before being pegged back. From an attacking scrum, Tom Burns dummied cleverly before ghosting through with a lovely break to score a richly deserved try. Jo Miles converted to extend the lead to 31-0 on the stroke of half time.

There was to be no respite for St. Albans as Ben Harrison Jones caught the ball from the kick off and set off on a 25 yard run. He released the ball to Will Cole who found Sam Fenton – no further invitation was needed as Sam sped through to score in the right hand corner. Jo Miles again added the conversion.

It was Will Cole’s turn to register his name on the score sheet and following some excellent handling by the backs, he blitzed through three tackles to touch down. Not content, almost from the restart Will picked up the ball once more and ran a full thirty yards to score his second try in as many minutes. Chris Jones converted to bring up a half century of points.

The plucky St. Alban’s pack wilted in the face of the onslaught and they were unable to get near Henry Davies as he set off on a slaloming run to score the ninth try of the match, which Chris Jones again converted.

Intense forward pressure resulted in Ben Harrison Jones breaking through to score another trademark try. As the game reached its conclusion a powerful drive from Gwilym Rees provided an opening for Rhys Powell who shook off two would-be tacklers to score the final try, Jo Miles added the conversion.

2nd Game – Pentyrch 61 St. Albans 0

The second match saw the Tyrchs deliver an equally strong performance to mark Harry Jones’ debut for the Under 10’s:

Almost from the kick off the home side’s pack gained a twenty yard territorial advantage and following a familiar drive, Ben Harrison Jones swept through the St. Albans defence to open the scoring. Sam Fenton converted.

Minutes later Ben was on the score sheet again, this time from a well worked line out call which saw him gather the ball 50 yards out and speed down the right wing to double the try count. Sam Fenton again added the two points.

The intensity was maintained- Elliott Jones put in some energy sapping tackles, and Owen Evans and Marcus Gallo made sure the ball was spread wide whenever the opportunity arose. As the Tyrchs pushed up field again it was Ben Harrison Jones who broke from a ruck to add to his already phenomenal try count. To maintain the symmetry Sam Fenton once more converted, bringing the score to 21-0.

As half time beckoned the Tyrchs turned the screw with two more tries. Firstly Sam Fenton touched down following a jinking run and Will Cole added another following a pick up from a line out. Sam converted both to push the score to 35-0.

Pentyrch made a number of substitutions at the start of the second half but this did not disrupt their momentum and, as the ball broke from the line out, Jo Miles drove through the tiring St.Albans defence to score. Chris Jones converted.

Minutes later, following some intelligent work by Gwilym Preest and Harry Jones, Jo Miles gratefully received a pass to dive over for yet another try, which Chris Jones again converted.

The Tyrchs piled on the agony for the visitors and Will Cole crossed for his fourth try of the day following a forward drive set up by some excellent play from Elliot Jones. The score was now 54-0 but the hunger remained….

As the clock ran down Tom Burns urged his pack downfield and endeavour was rewarded as Jo Miles saw a gap in the St. Albans defence and ran through to deliver the final try. Although injured when touching down, he shrugged off the pain to add the conversion which capped off an excellent performance.

Pentyrch U10s v Pencoed
28th October 2007

Final Score: Pentyrch 12 Pencoed 21

If the warm, energy sapping conditions encountered during last weekend’s fixture with Rhiwbina hinted at thoughts of an Indian summer, these were quickly dispelled as the home match against Pencoed was played in a climate more suited to the wilder scenes from King Lear or The Tempest. However, a Shakesperian tragedy this was not - the Under 10s matched their illustrious opponents in an entertaining game full of skill, endeavour, and determination.

Pencoed travelled with just 14 players whereas the Tyrchs could, once more, have fielded two almost completely different sides. Given the imbalance in numbers, and the inhospitable conditions, the coaches agreed to play one match in three segments, providing the opportunity for each of the boys to participate, albeit for a shorter period than usual.

1st Period
Pentyrch Starting Line-Up:
Ben Harrison Jones,Joseph Miles, Aaron Tomlinson, Ethan Denty, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Nick Bowler, Sam Fenton, Henry Davies

The Tyrchs started brightly with backs and forwards linking well, and completely unaffected by Pencoed’s formidable reputation. Both defences were well marshalled, although the home team enjoyed more possession in a gripping period of play. Sam Fenton cut loose early on but was nudged into touch just as he appeared destined to break through along the left wing.

Excellent work from Ben Harrison Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes maintained the pressure as they probed for gaps in the Pencoed line. They used the ball intelligently and communicated well with the backs. The fluent handling of Tom Angel, Rhys Lynch and Henry Davies belied the difficult conditions, but the away defence held firm and Pentyrch were unable to convert pressure into points.

Pencoed launched a series of counter attacks as the game ebbed and flowed, and the tackling of Ethan Denty & Tomos Angell denied the visitors as the first period of play drew to a close.

2nd Period
Pentyrch Substitutions :
Gwilym Rees, Owen Evans, Tom Burns, Sam James, Rhys Powell, Matthew Stewart, Chris Jones

The second period saw Pencoed maintain pressure as their unchanged team looked to exploit any uncertainty in the newly assembled home line-up. Eventually their efforts were rewarded as they drove over for a converted try. Undeterred, Pentyrch hit back with Gwilym Rees and Ben Harrison Jones leading the charge. Neither side were able to gain the ascendancy and whilst the Tyrchs had opportunities of their own, they were grateful to Rhys Lynch and Henry Davies for try saving tackles. The tension grew as both sets of forwards fought to take control the match as the second period drew to a close.

3rd Period
Pentyrch Substitution
Elliot Jones

The home side made a number of changes which saw several of the players involved in the first period returning to the field. This period of the match also saw Elliot Jones make a welcome debut for the club.

The weather was beginning to take its toll and Pencoed squeezed over for a second converted try in the corner. Sensing victory they pushed forward again, and when they scored their third try shortly afterwards it looked as if the outcome was beyond doubt.

Against all the odds the boys stormed back and, after a series of forward drives, Rhodri Davies Hughes emerged from a heap of bodies close to the right touchline having scored a richly deserved try.

There was more to come, as the home side gained momentum they began to pressurise the Pencoed pack forcing a number of uncharacteristic handling errors. A great break saw Nick Bowler and Rhodri Davies Hughes tear up the field before releasing Sam Fenton who ghosted through three tackles to score a try which he gratefully converted.

The final whistle blew and although the score was probably a fair reflection of the three periods of play, this was another step forward in the Tyrchs’ development. They have proved in recent weeks that they are able to compete on an even footing with the best teams in the Cardiff and Bridgend districts. Skill, speed of thought, and strong team spirit are increasingly evident and reflected in the confident interplay between backs and forwards.

The coaches deserve great credit for developing such a well motivated squad of well over 20 players which in overall terms demonstrates a degree of strength in depth which must be the envy of their opponents.

Pentyrch U10s v Rhiwbina U10s
21st Oct 2007

1st Game
Pentrych 0 Rhiwbina 14

The warm sunshine although appreciated by the supporters made a tough encounter even harder as the Tyrchs fought to contain their local rivals Rhiwbina. Pentyrch can take heart from their defensive efforts and commitment in the loose but the pressure exerted by the visiting pack eventually provided scores one at the end of each half.

Pentyrch started well up the slope and maintained territory for the first five minutes with some determined drives; Ben Harrison Jones and Will Cole were again to the fore. Significantly however Pentyrch failed to beak down the visitors’ well organised defence in this period.

Rhiwbina then began an extended period of pressure which saw them gain territorial advantage for the remainder of the half. Pentyrch were fortunate when, after good handling in their backs, the Rhiwbina wing crossed in the corner but failed to ground the ball.

The home side’s hopes suffered a blow when Sam Fenton had to retire injured. The persistent pressure by the visitors required brave efforts from the Tyrchs. Gwilym Rees, Rhys Powell, Ethan Denty and Aaron Tomlinson were amongst those working hard at the breakdown. Henry Davies made a couple of try saving tackles on the wing. The pressure eventually told however when just before the break Rhiwbina broke the defensive line and they finished the half with a converted try.

Early in the second half Rhiwbina again put stern pressure on Pentyrch and Henry Davies again executed a crucial tackle out wide. Occasionally Pentyrch broke away but good covering tackles by Rhiwbina halted their ambitions. Joseph Miles was unlucky not to get away after Ben Harrison Jones powered down the touchline. Rhiwbina used turnover ball to launch wave after wave of attacks which were repelled by the Tyrchs tackling efforts including those of Tomos Angell, Rhodri Davies Hughes and substitute Sam James. Finally however the visitors broke through and scored in the corner to seal a hard fought victory. The try was converted and the final whistle blew.

2nd Game
Pentyrch 19 Rhiwbina 12

Pentyrch showed character in this encounter as they came from behind in another tough forward dominated game. The wingers Marcus Gallo and Matthew Patterson made some promising breaks and were both unlucky not to score. Gwilym Rees was a terrier in the loose and Tom Burns a live wire at scrum half.

Pentyrch had the better of the opening exchanges and some good tackling kept Rhiwbina penned back. Rhiwbina cleared with a kick and capitalised on the loose ball to break away and score a try that went unconverted. From the restart Ethan Denty won second phase ball which was driven on by Joseph Miles, the ball was spun out to Marcus Gallo on the wing who was just caught. Shortly after, the Tyrchs won ruck ball and Tom Burns fed Sam James who held off a couple of defenders and scored in the corner. Rhys Lynch converted to edge Pentyrch in front. Rhiwbina responded strongly but hard tackling and driving in the mauls from Matthew Stewart and Owen Evans kept them out.

Early in the second half telling pressure on the Rhiwbina backs forced a scrum five. Tom Burns broke blind, he was well supported by the pack who took it on towards the line, and a try was awarded to Gwilym Rees who later emerged from the bottom of the pile up. Sam James’ conversion attempt unluckily came back off the bar.

From the kick off after half time Pentyrch’s pack collected and set up good quality ball for the backs. Outside half Rhys Lynch broke the gain line and fed substitute Ben Harrison Jones who was held by Rhiwbina some 20 m out. Rhiwbina were penalised for entering the maul from the wrong side. The penalty move set Ben Harrison Jones on a powerful run breaking several tackles as he made his way to the far corner. Rhys Lynch added the two points.

Rhiwbina again pressured Pentyrch and were rewarded when following good support work up the right wing, their backs scored again. The kick put the visitors within a converted try. It was Pentyrch however who enjoyed the possession and territory in the dying minutes and they were unlucky not to score before the final whistle.

Tondu & Nantyfyllon U10s v Pentyrch U10s
14th October 2007

The season of mists continued to offer a fruitful return for the Under 10’s as they paid a second visit to the foothills of the Llynfi Valley. This time they travelled anticipating a mountain to climb in the shape of Tondu RFC, but as things turned out, Nantyfyllon also headed south to set up a three way contest in the style of the Tri-Nations tournament. With 20 Pentyrch boys available for selection, the coaching team had the opportunity to field two entirely different teams, and their shrewd approach was rewarded by excellent performances in both matches.

1st Game
Nantyfyllon 7 Pentyrch 14

The Nantyfyllon forwards looked bigger and stronger than when the two sides last met, but Pentyrch started briskly with Rhys Lynch spreading the ball well. ‘Nanty’ held firm & eventually began to exert pressure, and the Tyrch’s relied upon committed tackling from Ethan Denty & Owen Evans to keep them out. The boys gradually gained the upper hand, inevitably led by the drives of Ben Harrison Jones and darting runs of Henry Davies. Pressure was converted into points following an excellent break from Ben, taken up by Rhys Lynch & Nick Bowler, whose intelligent pass fed Henry Davies who scored in the corner. Rhys Lynch converted.

The second half opened with Nantyfyllon forcing their way back into contention through strong forward drives. Marcus Gallo, Tomos Angell & Nick Bowler provided admirable support to the Tyrchs’ front five to keep them out, but they were unable to stem the tide indefinitely & eventually Nantyfyllon crossed to draw level.

Pentyrch hit back immediately with Rhys Lynch leading the line. Sam Fenton joined the fray as substitute for the injured Nick Bowler and his fearless commitment in chasing down a loose ball paid dividends as Rhys Lynch fed Ben Harrison Jones who powered his way through several despairing tackles to score the decisive try, which Rhys then converted.

The game was far from over but Pentyrch’s determination was embodied in the efforts of Gwilym Rees, Matthew Stewart and substitute Aaron Tomlinson, each of whom made crucial tackles in the closing minutes.

The scoreline was close, but in truth this was a comprehensive & richly deserved win for Pentyrch, whose style of play and intensity matched the high standards they set for themselves towards the end of last season.

2nd Game
Tondu 0 Pentyrch 28

The Tyrch’s got off to a flying start, and within minutes Chris Jones had laid the ball off to Joseph Miles, who cleverly fed Rhodri Davies Hughes. From the ensuing ruck Rhodri drove through the hapless Tondu defence to open the scoring. Chris Jones converted.

The backs & forwards continued to link well and Sam Fenton deftly off loaded to Rhodri Davies Hughes. The ball was released to Joseph Miles who set off on an unstoppable run to score a memorable try, converted by Sam Fenton.

Pentyrch maintained pressure throughout the first half, tackling firmly and capitalising on opportunities. They took up residence close to the Tondu line, and Will Cole was unlucky to be held up following a series of drives. Several line outs ensued and from the last of these, second phase ball was spun out to Sam Fenton who raced over to score in the corner after a looping run. Sam James added the conversion.

Tondu made a number of substitutions at half time and their pack began to exert more pressure. They were denied by some great tackles from Tom Burns, Aaron Tomlinson & Matthew Patterson. Tom, sporting a black eye, reluctantly departed the fray and Tomos Angell came on as substitute. Joseph Miles was also injured soon after & Ben Harrison Jones stepped in to fill the breach.

Mid way through the half Rhodri Davies Hughes ripped the ball out from a ruck, & Dafydd Dodson maintained the momentum, slipping a pass out to the wing. The ball was cleared by the home side, but timely tackles from Sam James & Aaron Tomlinson prevented them from progressing. Chris Jones then made a strong run out of defence, feeding Ben Harrison Jones who carried the ball forward before releasing to Mathew Patterson. A neat pass found Will Cole, who sped over the line to score a well deserved try, which Chris Jones converted. The final whistle followed, and all 20 Pentyrch boys joined to celebrate a unique ‘double’ over their Bridgend district rivals.

Pentyrch U10s v Penarth U10s: 7th Oct 2007.

1st Game: Pentrych 54 Penarth 0

Although several Pentyrch players were away sunning themselves on the West Wales coast there was to be no repeat of the weekend’s World Cup upsets when the local seasiders climbed the hill and met a harsh welcome.

Although Penarth’s tackling was good in patches and they had occasional good driving movements such periods were few and far between and the game’s opportunities were ruthlessly exploited by the Tyrchs none more so than Sam Fenton who amassed an impressive personal tally of 31 points over the two games played.

Pentyrch recycled the possession on several occasions and took their chances well to build a convincing win comprising eight tries. Will Cole again had a good game characterised by several pick and drives making the hard yards. Owen Evans and Ethan Denty worked hard to provide plenty of ball for the backs. Promising contributions were made by newcomers Aaron Tomlinson and, in the second game, Marcus Gallo.

The first of the scores followed a period of pressure in the Penarth half as the ball was spun out along the line to Chris Jones who had a lot to do but made it over the line. Sam Fenton converted. From the restart Penarth briefly established a position deep in Pentyrch territory half but the Tychs pack won 2nd phase ball which Sam Fenton collected and set off on a sprint almost the length of the pitch to score the first of his four tries. Soon after skipper Ben Harrison Jones was fed from a short penalty and burst his way through to the corner. Sam again converted.

Another penalty released Henry Davies on a piercing run through the middle, the ball was taken on by Will Cole and then Sam Fenton with a devastating change of direction left the defence floundering and touched down near the corner. Rhys Lynch added the conversion. Just before half time the Pentyrch backs combined well and released Chris Jones on a jinking run, Henry Davies took it on well and scored the first of his brace of tries which was converted by Rhys Lynch.

For his second, Henry picked up a loose ball a good distance out and sprinted to the corner just after the break. Rhys Lynch added the two points.

The next try resulted from a good collective effort; from a centre field scrum a swift and accurate pass from substitute inside half Sam James set the backs motoring and Sam Fenton again completed the move with a try in the corner. Joe Miles converted. The final score came from possession secured by Rhys Lynch, scrum half Sam James then fed Sam Fenton who………….I think you can guess the rest. Joseph Miles slotted the kick over.

Conversions: Sam Fenton 2, Rhys Lynch 3, Joseph Miles 2

2nd Game: Pentyrch 37 Penarth 0

Pentyrch proved too strong for Penarth and ran in seven tries in quick succession in this short game. The game did however include some good back moves. At the first break down following the kick off Sam Fenton picked up and set off on a now a familiar run into the corner, he then converted. Shortly after the restart Owen Evans passed well to Ben Harrison Jones whose 20 m touchline hugging run saw him clear into the corner. The ref. dispensed with conversions. All too quickly Ben was at the head of a 20 m forward drive ably supported by Ethan Denty that culminated in another score.

After half time Will Cole followed up a kick, picked-up and made good ground with a penetrating drive, the ball was then spun along the line for Chris Jones to cross over out wide. For the next score the Pentrych backs showed great handling skills as the ball passed out to the wing and back inside to Rhys Lynch who raced over for a try. Shortly after Joseph Miles demonstrated good ripping skills and broke free to sprint for his try. Almost immediately, Ben Harrison Jones with an identical attack completed his hat trick (and four for the day). The whistle came not a moment too soon for the visitors.

Nantyfyllon U10s v Pentyrch U10s
30th Sept 2007.

1st Game
Nantyfyllon 5 Pentyrch 10

A visit to the Llynfi Valley provided a stern test for Pentyrch, but a resilient and determined defensive display paid dividends as the Under 10’s edged to a narrow, but thoroughly deserved victory.

Continuing the form shown at Llanishen, Pentyrch served early notice of their intentions as Ben Harrison-Jones drove forward only to be held up close to the line. Soon afterwards, Henry Davies broke through, and although the home side regrouped Rhodri Davies Hughes was able to pick up & drive over from the ensuing ruck. Stung into action, Nantyfyllon responded, but tenacious tackling from Gwilym Rees & Nick Bowler preserved the lead, supported by relieving kicks from Rhys Lynch & Chris Jones.

The second half opened in similar fashion, with Joseph Miles leading the charge. The home side fought back, and although Rhys Lynch made a try saving tackle, Nantyfyllon’s strong running was eventually rewarded with a score. The Tyrchs hit straight back as Will Cole set off on a bullocking run, and following another drive from Rhodri Davies Hughes, Gwilym Rees was unlucky to see his ‘try’ disallowed.

Tom Burns released the ball intelligently from the base of the scrum, and from another well worked move Henry Davies tore through the home defence, but was forced into touch just before he crossed the try line.

The pressure eventually told and Ben Harrison Jones capped a fine all round display by driving over for the decisive score, supported en route by the rampant Pentyrch pack.

This was a significant challenge for the boys and they responded well, maintaining discipline, using the ball sensibly, and making the most of the opportunities which their endeavours fully merited.

2nd Game
Nanytfyllon 30 Pentyrch 0

Nantyfyllon fielded a virtually unchanged team for the second game, and this clearly worked to their advantage. They were fully warmed up and Pentyrch were effectively caught cold from the outset. Once the home side had scored two early tries, it became increasingly difficult for the Tyrch’s to gain momentum, as they attempted to play catch up rugby.

Furthermore, as the match was restricted to a single 20 minute period of play, there was limited opportunity for our boys to try & develop a game plan.
In spite of this they can take heart from a committed defensive display, which was not reflected in the final scoreline. Matthew Stewart tackled fearlessly throughout, Ethan Denty once more proved adept at winning loose ball, and Rhys Powell & Tom Angell worked hard to make use of the limited possession they were afforded.

Llanishen U10s v Pentyrch U10s
23rd Sept 2007.

1st Game
Llanishen 0 Pentyrch 38

Some good incisive running based on a solid and efficient forward platform provided the foundation for this well deserved win for Pentyrch. Good handling in the backs and forwards and some individual strong breaks produced six tries with no reply from the home side.
Ben Harrison-Jones opened the scoring with a strong break down the middle assisted by good support from Gwilym Rees and Joseph Miles. Sam Fenton added the conversion. Shortly after, Will Cole broke a few tackles as he charged from the half way to make the touchdown. The restart kick was fielded well by Will Cole and from the resulting maul the ball was quickly fed to Sam Fenton who raced into the corner leaving the despairing would-be tacklers in his wake. Rhodri Davies-Hughes had an excellent game, the first of his two tries followed a strong run through the middle of the defence. Sam Fenton added the conversion.

Early in the second half, following some good handling, Chris Jones made a break up to the 22 and then fed Rhodri Davies-Hughes who made it into the corner. Chris Jones converted. Pentyrch were awarded a scrum after the failed restart kick by Llanishen. Tom Burns fed Sam Fenton who released Chris Jones who set off on a lovely balanced run weaving his way past the defence for the touchdown. Chris then added the conversion.

2nd Game
Llanishen 5 Pentyrch 21

Pentyrch’s forwards again provided consistent second phase ball to release the back line for the opportunities in this game. Early on, Nick Bowler at inside half took Llanishen by surprise when he picked up from a half way scrum and sprinted to the corner. Rhys Lynch converted to make it 7-0. Llanishen however responded with some strong forward work and broke through the Pentrych defence to score and make it 7-5.
Pentyrch’s forwards continued to supply plenty of ball for the backs and just before half time Rhys Lynch collected a pass near the half way and exploited a gap in the defence to score an important try before the break. Outside half Sam James added the two points.

In the second half good ball from an attacking ruck allowed Nick Bowler to feed Rhys Lynch near the 22 who won the race to the corner. Wing substitute Sam Fenton converted.

Pentrych’s defence will face tougher tests in the next couple of months, but this double win will help build their confidence. A special welcome to two new members of the squad,Dafydd Dodson & Sam James, both of whom made their debuts last weekend.

U13's

At last you might say a report about the present under 13’s!!!

Record so far, including the East District Tournament. Played 16 Won 8 Lost 7 Drawn 1

34 boys have represented the side

A season of transition has resulted in a mixed bag of results and performances. After four outstanding years under the Cookster the players quickly realised that this season would be different and they found that many of our old rivals were looking for years of revenge! Our boys also noticed that some of the teams we regularly beat had grown considerably.
After loosing to Rhiwbina in the first game of the season we quickly bounced back thrashing Ynysybwl but this was to be a false dawn. The lads took time to realise that games would no longer be “push over” and the tactic of give it to Gabe would no longer work. Added to this the rotation system we developed had a detrimental affect on continuity in the short term but as the boys are now realising it would prove successful in the longer term.Another factor was the loss of three players with broken wrists!!

The lads struggled against the more aggressive and physical sides we encountered early on but gradually they are beginning to find the “Dog” we so affectionately talked about in training. Their attitude in training is improving all the time and the determination to put things right is developing. A number of players have cemented their positions in the team but in general competition for all positions is excellent. In recent games despite many changes to the team before and during the game it has not affected the style and commitment. In the backs it would be fair to say that we have not clicked yet.

Despite many different combinations the ball is not being transferred into space quickly or accurately enough and consequently Gabe who normally is able to run around all opposition is finding himself closely marked when attacking. His defensive work however is outstanding and he must have saved a score of tries this season so far. Recentely Garmon has staked a claim for the 12 shirt with outstanding performances against Rhydyfelin and Dinas Powis. The pick of the backs so far must be Ben for his work in both attack and defence. Evs has played steadily at 9 with his service improving all the time. He is being pushed by Mathew who has played well in all positions. Little Owen is now finding confidence and form and staking his claim for the 10 shirt.Jordan has also played well at 15 in many games. Most improved player so far must be Martyn in the backs and his strong illusive running reminiscent of David Duckham is causing opposition backs plenty of trouble. Basha continues to improve and is our top try scorer at present.

The second half of the season will I’m sure see more boys push for a place and no position is guaranteed. Up front we were battered and bullied by Bridgend but this was a game in which we learnt many lessons. Ryan has proved a more than adequate replacement in a very good front row including Dan, Ben and Will our captain. The Hooker position is also keenly contested with Ben just edging Matty at the moment. The second row has seen the resurgence of Alister who has put in some outstanding performances.Loz is growing all the time and when he realises how strong he actually is some of the teams can look out in the coming seasons. The back row is very competitive and all combinations have played well. Jambo has converted to 6, whilst Smithy was playing good rugby before his injury.Dan has been the backbone of the forwards playing in a number of positions, his commitment never in doubt. Ollie has put on yet another growth spurt and is a force at 8. Recently Hari played well at 7 having done well at 10 and 12.Another contender after a storming performance against Dinas will be Matthew.

The future looks good and with the outstanding Reesy due back soon and the return of Cookie, Smithy and James competition will be great. Added to this the ever improving Sam (Longville) and Sam (2nd row) with little Jack, Chris Bowler, Coombesy and Iwan, the team is sure to develop. Keep up the good work lads it will pay off.

FRIDAY 28th MARCH 2008

Pentyrch 17 – CRICC 7

The penultimate game of the season saw an evening game under lights against CRICC, with conditions underfoot wet, but early on, dry overhead.

After a fairly even first 10 minutes the Tyrchs fell behind to an opportunity CRICC try and conversion following a charged down kick on the home sides 10 metre line. The rest of the half was ebb and flow, with the wet conditions causing some handling errors on both sides.

With half time approaching, the home side put together some controlled rugby with the forwards taking control and both Mike Cooper and Alex Taylor scoring from ruck and maul close to the CRICC line.

After half time the heavens opened and sleet was being driven horizontal on a north westerly wind. Despite the conditions the Tyrchs stuck at their game and further driving from the forwards resulted in Mandeep Sall adding a third try, converted by Stewart Melrose.

In deteriorating weather both sides showed enterprise, but no further scoring took place and the final score was 17-7 to the home side.

SATURDAY 22nd MARCH 2008

Portadown 8 – Pentyrch 20

A bright but windy day heralded the Tyrchs tour match at the very well appointed Portadown club, south of Belfast.

Early exchanges set the tone for the match, with the visitors looking to run in good, dry conditions and a home side, with a big pack, looking to pick up and drive at every opportunity.

The contrasting styles made for interesting rugby, with the home side taking an early three point lead following a penalty offence at a ruck in front of the Tyrchs posts.

Facing the strong wind in the first half the visitors then broke from their own 22 and after good support play from the backs, Ben Morris was put in space to run in from half way. Ross Taylor added a second try after pressure on the home line for a 10-3 lead coming up to half time. From the resultant kick off the Tyrchs made a mess of collecting a bouncing ball putting themselves under pressure deep in their 22. The strength of the Portadown forwards saw them drive over to score and go in to half time 8-10 down.

The second half saw the Tyrchs take an element of control, although they were never comfortable kicking into the strong wind. With ball in hand they threatened on several occasions and Mike Cooper crashed over for a try from close range.

Shortly after Mike Cooper again picked up from a ruck on the home 22 and with determined running and a deft sidestep outpaced the defence to score a second try.

A final score line of 20-8 was a fitting reward for the boys endeavours, enterprise and resolute defence to a very strong Portadown pack pick and go tactics.

A day of great rugby and hospitality, with sincere thanks to all at Portadown RFC.

SUNDAY 2nd March 2008

Pentyrch 0 – Dinas Powys 12

On a blustery, yet mild day, all seemed to be going to plan for Pentyrch to seize victory against a strong Dinas Powys squad, as the home forwards especially threatened the Dinas Powys pack in lineouts and scrummages. Although they forfeited a weak try within the first 10 minutes the Tyrchs' pack continued to drive forward against a lacklustre Dinas Powys side. Most of the territory and possession belonged to the Tyrchs for the majority of the first half, although this was not turned into points.

The second half continued at a much increased pace from the Dinas Powys side, but they were still a unable to break a strong and determined backline in defence with outstanding, try-saving tackles, made by Dave Edmonds and under 16s newcomer Lewis Phillips. Several line breaking runs from both forwards and backs combined posed a serious threat to Dinas Powys' undefeated record.

The flow of the game was severely hampered by the very poor standard of refereeing, causing much aggravation within the team and supporters. A further score was conceded and although the Tyrchs rallied strongly they were not able to overcome a 12 point deficit in the last 20 minutes.

Although the Tyrchs had no rub of the green during the match or with refereeing decisions, they were extremely disappointed to lose a match that was there for the taking in different circumstances.

SUNDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2008

Pentyrch 19 – Risca 5

The return fixture at home proved as difficult for the Tyrchs as the seasons earlier game at Risca.

Evenly matched up front, the home side squandered early possession with the backs making a high proportion of handling errors in wet and windy conditions. After an early try from Ben Morris, converted by Stewart Melrose, the Tyrchs took control of the first half, but despite pressure, their poor handling and choice of options let them down. Half time came with no further score.

Early in the second half after sustained pressure on the Risca line Alex Taylor drove over for a try, which was unconverted. Risca then increased the tempo for the remainder of the match and following pressure on the Tyrchs 22, scored a quality try after a neat chip over the defence by the opposition fly half which was gathered and touched down.

The game then ebbed and flowed into both 22s, with frequent interruptions for scrums following handling errors by both sides. As the game came to a close a quick break by the Tyrchs , with good offloading split the Risca defence for Ben Morris to score his second try , converted by Stewart Melrose.

A competitive game, in difficult conditions, with flashes of quality from both sides.

SUNDAY 17th FEBRUARY 2008

Llanrumney 0 – Pentyrch 43

In the first fixture between the sides and Llanrumneys first season, the weather was an early spring bonus – bright and sunny.

Due to half term, the Tyrchs had a bare 15, meaning some players needed to play out of position which affected the lineout particularly. The rest of their play was however pleasing to watch with quick hands, early offloads and a running style which was too much for Llanrumney to defend for the full game.

A hat-trick of tries in the first half for Ben Morris and one for Trystan Palfrey, with conversions of three by Ross Taylor saw the away side turn round at half time 26 points to the good.

Further committed running, coupled with resolute defence when Llanrumney attacked again gave the Tyrchs control of long periods of the half. Further tries from Lloyd Davies (2) and Lewis Phillips with Ross Taylor adding one conversion made the final score an emphatic one at 43-0.

SUNDAY 27th JANUARY 2008

Abergavenny 3 – Pentyrch 51

The long drive to Abergavenny was rewarded with a glorious sunny day in the Gateway to Wales, and drier conditions than experienced in the recent weeks after all the rain.

The Tyrchs started positively, defending resolutely for the first ten minutes and soaking up the home sides attacks. After Mandeep Sall had charged over from the home 22 to open the scoring, the visiting supporters could be forgiven for thinking that they were in Paris in the spring, such was the quality of running rugby from Pentyrch. Half time arrived in a flash, but in the meantime tries had been scored by Michael Cooper (2) Ben Morris (2) with a conversion from Stewart Melrose to give the visitors a 27-0 lead.

The second half saw the home side concede further tries from an opposition that continued to produce a high octane running game with tries from Lewis Phillips (2) and a further brace from Ben Morris. Two further conversions from Stewart Melrose took the Tyrchs over the half century, although Abergavenny had opened their account with a penalty mid way through the half.

A great all round display from the whole team in perfect conditions.

SUNDAY 13th January 2008

Pentyrch 5 - Bridgend Athletic 34

A wet and windy day posed a morning with little to remember for the Pentyrch boys.

With poor pitch conditions following the Saturday 1st team match, the home side were untidy and out of sorts at the start of the game. Although the forwards battled hard, in the prevailing conditions, the backs were not able to capitalize. Squandered possession gave Bridgend an early try and there were few improvements over the next 20 minutes as an unusually nervous Pentyrch shipped another 4 weak tries. The Tyrchs play improved in the run up to half time in line with the conditions and they managed to claw back a try towards the end of the first half.

With an uphill challenge to overcome in the second half a further soft try was conceded by the Tyrchs, Bridgend having been re-awoken by their half-time team talk. Although the general standard of play had definitely taken a turn for the better in the second half the Tyrchs were unable to add to their half time score against a well drilled defensive line.

At the end of the match the players were generally unhappy with their lack-lustre performance, which although improved in the second half, by no means reflected the squad's progression throughout the season.

SUNDAY 6th JANUARY 2008

Caerleon 49 – Pentyrch 0

The new year opener in Gwent provided a performance far below the standards of the squad and the travelling supporters could be forgiven for thinking that it was still Turkey and Xmas Pudding rather than rugby.

The Tyrchs failed to compete in all aspects of the game in the first half and conceded scores at regular intervals from a well drilled and disciplined home side, who went into the break 35 points to the good.

The half time team talk seemed to have some effect, as the second half performance was significantly more upbeat and competitive. The home side scored a further two converted tries to run out comprehensive winners at 49-0.

SUNDAY 16th DECEMBER 2007

CRICC 12 – Pentyrch 26

After the loss of three weekends to poor weather both sides were keen to get in a fixture before the Xmas break, although conditions under foot were, in racing terms - good to soft.

The early exchanges were evenly contested, with both sides attacking and defending competently whilst trying to create an opening for a score.

The visitors opened the scoring when Stewart Melrose went over with Rob Morgan adding the conversion. Mandeep Sall then drove over from close range following concerted pressure on the CRICC line, with Rob adding a second conversion.

At that point the Tyrchs were starting to take control, but ill discipline resulted in two yellow cards and a reduction to 13 which meant that the visitors were unable to press home any advantage in the second quarter when they looked as though they could have scored more. Half time came with the score at 14-0.

The second half saw a spirited reposte from the home side who opened the scoring with an unconverted try before Robert Morgan ran in to increase the visitors lead to 19-5 with a quarter to go.

The final period of the match saw the Tyrchs having to defend stoutly for a sustained period, but the pressure was eased by a final try from Lloyd Davies, converted by Rob Morgan for a final score of 26-12.

A competent performance that should have been much better if the Tyrchs had held their discipline

Sunday 18th November 2007

Pentyrch 19 – St Peters 5

If the boys thought that the last game at home was played in unfriendly and cold conditions, then the elements facing the two sides today were positively appalling. A strong easterly gale blowing in a horizontal and persistent day of rain meant that crisp handling was never likely to feature.

Playing up the hill in the first half the Tyrchs adapted quickly to the conditions with Stewart Melville controlling the game from fly half in tremendous fashion. Kicking behind the St Peters backs and turning them after tremendous work by the forwards, the home side had numerous opportunities to pressure the defence.

From such a kick and chase Dan Jones used his skill and strength to drive over the line with a conversion added by Robert Morgan for an early 7-0 lead.

An excellent break inside from a scrum by Ben Morris, on the opposition 10 metre line, saw him run in unopposed with Robert again adding the conversion. Further pressure following kicks through saw Ben Morris grab a second opportunist try from persistent pressure in the St Peters 22.

The visitors then came strongly into the match as the first half was drawing to a close and they crossed for a well deserved try on half time, to bring the score at the break to 19-5 to the Tyrchs.

By this time, in the prevailing conditions, the seagulls, seeking shelter inland from the coast, were swimming in all the standing water on the pitch and the game ended at half time to ensure all players safety.

A very encouraging performance given the conditions, which were the worst of the season to date, with both kick and chase and some very assured handling coming to the fore. Well done boys.

SUNDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2007

Pentyrch 12 – Tondu 19

Try scorers: Rob Morgan
Ben Morris

Conversion Stewart Melville

It was a horribly cold day up at Pentyrch RFC, but the weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the u16’s having come in to the game on the back of 2 consecutive victory’s and the best start to the season our boys had ever had.

The game started off well with the Tyrchs scoring early on, after good handling from the backs set Robert Morgan in for a 30 yard run in.

What should have followed was more of the same intensity from the Tyrch’s, but instead of this, the home side became too complacent and Tondu took full advantage of this, running in 2 converted try’s before half time.

The second half followed much the same as the first, with the Tyrchs coming out as they had in the first half, sustaining pressure and coming away with a well deserved try scored by Ben Morris which was successfully converted by outside half Stewart Melville.

Unfortunately Tondu then piled on the pressure and although the Tyrchs put in a courageous effort, Tondu’s physicality and determination proved too much and the visitors crossed for their third try close to the final whistle, which put the game beyond the reach of the Tyrchs.

As the final whistle blew the Tyrch’s were clearly disappointed at having let the game slip from their hands, but also proud of the performance which really showed how far they had come since last season’s humiliating 31- 0 defeat at Tondu.

SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER 2007

PENARTH 3 – PENTYRCH 10

After the convincing display, especially in the second half at Risca, a distinct attack of dropsy at Penarth saw the early performance drop below the standards of the season so far. In the first half the home side kicked a penalty to lead at the interval 3-0, but it will be a half the Tyrchs will want to forget as nothing went to hand and promising attacks were spoiled by dropped passes.

An equal forward battle saw the home side run well from defence, putting pressure on the tackling defence of Pentyrch.

Eventually the visitors began to play their normal game and became ever more threatening in the second half, building concerted pressure and stretching the home side defence.

Two late tries for Rob Morgan and Ben Morris saw the Tyrchs come away with a hard earned win after a first half performance lacking in skill and finesse. The second half performance probably meant that the final result of 10 -3 was a true reflection of a hard fought game.

SUNDAY 30th SEPTEMBER 2007

RISCA 10 – PENTYRCH 35

Hoping to build on the encouraging start to the season the previous week the Tyrchs travelled to Risca for their second fixture of the season.

The home side opened the scoring early with an unconverted try while their opponents were still shrugging the sleep from their eyes. The early concession however had the desired effect with the Tyrchs coming more and more into the game, playing a quick hands and offloading game. Tristan Palfrey made great ground from a ruck on half way to score with Nicky Williams adding the conversion.

Just before half time the home side scored their second try for a 10-7 advantage at the break, after a lack of discipline from the visitors saw them reduced to 14 men for ten minutes either side of half time.

Substitutions at half time by the Tyrchs saw some strong runners brought on to the pitch in both the back division and the back row, which led to a fast hands half of rugby which yielded two tries for Rob Morgan and tries from Ben Morris, Lloyd Davies and Stewart Melrose. Rob Morgan added conversions to all the scores to leave the Tyrchs worthy winners at 35 – 10.

A convincing result, which could have been even better if all players had applied a more disciplined approach to the whole game.

SUNDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER 2007

PENTYRCH 19 – LLANISHEN 19

The opening game of the season promised much, with the squad looking forward to a quick start against traditionally tough opponents.

Starting quickly and not looking too rusty from the close season, the Tyrchs opened the scoring when a flowing running movement allowed Robert Morgan space out wide to outpace the defence and score, with Nicky Williams adding the conversion. Llanishen came right back into it with a score of their own, to bring the sides level at 7 points all at the interval.

An enterprising running attack from the home side allowed Rob Morgan a second score early in the second half, with the conversion added by Dave Edmonds. Just like the first half, Llanishen then hit back with a further try to reduce the deficit to two points at 14-12. going into the last quarter of the game.

Rob Morgans hat trick of tries with five minutes remaining set the game up for a grandstand finish. A lack of awareness in the Llanishen 22 when the Tyrchs were on the attack saw the home side driven back into their own 22 and scrambling in defence to earn a 22 drop out.

The resulting drop out, taken too quickly, was charged down, putting the home side in a difficult defensive position and after several phases Llanishen crossed for a converted try to tie the game up at 19 points a piece.

A great open game for the first match of the season and an encouraging base from which the Tyrchs can develop a running, supportive, offloading game for the rest of the season.
