Pentyrch II v Sully Sports (SS) - 28 January 2012

With the 1st XV having no fixture the attention turned to the 2nd XV hosting SS in a friendly game. This turned out to be a terrific game of rugby, with Pentyrch eventually winning 34-31. The visitors scored the opening unconverted try, but this was soon followed by prop Tim Mullin going over for two tries, the first of which was converted by Ryan Ali, one of the Youth XV players on display. Ryan's father, Adam, played at No.8. SS hit back with a try of their own before Nathan Williams, another Pentyrch Youth player, scored a great individual try in the corner.

This made the score 17-10. Tim Mullin scored his try hatrick and this was followed by Tom Marley going over in the corner. None of the tries were converted and Pentyrch stretched their lead to 27-10. Midway through the second half SS scored two converted tries within two minutes, to make the score 27-24. At this stage it was anyone's game. Pentyrch attacked again from deep and this saw prop Sean Meredith go over for a try, which Ryan Ali converted. At the very end SS scored a converted try to end what was a very entertaining game.

Rhiwbina Away 17th Dec

Score 19-0

The second xv travelled to play a league match against Rhiwbina at Whitchurch hospital (very soggy) pitch, as we only had the bear XV for approx 12mins of the match (this was due to the late arrival of a player and an injury later) it was a respectable score to lose 19-0 as the Rhiwbina pack dominated the game and some forced errors while we were trying to break out from our 22 saw them run in 2 simple second half tries after they had bulldozed over in the first half to lead 5-0 at half time. The club needs more COMMITMENT from  certain players to get us back to the sort of form we had last season, so come on you Young Tyrch’s get back to the training and let’s  get the side playing running rugby as we know we can do .

LLANDAFF IIs v PENTYRCH IIs - 12 NOVEMBER 2011

Due to the postponement of the 1st XV fixture against Gwernyfed the spotlight this week is on the 2nd XV, who played away against Llandaff. It was pleasing to see quite a few Youth XV players in the team, as their match was also postponed. This was an excellent game of rugby to watch as both teams looked to keep the ball alive and tried to play open, attractive rugby. The first half was very even. Pentyrch may have had most of the possession but a strong Llandaff defence limited the visitors to a single try in the first half, scored by Barry Topping-Morris. The conversion hit the post.

Llandaff started the second half strongly and scored a converted try in the opening five minutes to lead 7-5. That score signalled a response from Pentyrch who's younger, quicker players took control of the game. Six converted tries were scored without response for Pentyrch to stretch into a 47-7 lead, in the process playing some excellent, flowing rugby. Barry Topping-Morris scored his second try, with others coming from Adam Scanlon, Jordan Hughes, Berian Davies, Marc Evans and Hywel Chatham, who also converted all six tries. Llandaff never gave up and scored a converted try with the last move of the game to make the final score 14-47. Other Youth Team players, apart from those who scored, included Ryan Ali, Will Adam-Jones and Robbie Thomas. It was the first occasion for Robbie to play alongside his brother Rhys in a representative game for Pentyrch.

It was a pitty the 1st XV game was postponed as the club held a Former Players/Officials reunion party on the day. Around 70/80 former players and officials were in attendance and a very successful and enjoyable reunion was had by all.

The 1st XV play away at Llanishen next Saturday, 19 November. The 2nd XV are also away against Cardiff Harlequins (formerly CHSOB).
