Pentyrch U12’s 12 Rhiwbina U12’s 40

28th February 2010

When Neil Young sang about ‘All those things that don’t change, come what may’ in his definitive 1978 interpretation of ‘Four Strong Winds’, he could easily have been foretelling a number of later events: the Welsh team’s propensity to gift at least one interception try in every six nation’s fixture, the likelihood of Ashley Cole making full use of his free monthly mobile phone texts, or perhaps the lethargic first half reaction of the Tyrch’s defence whenever Rhiwbina seem to visit Parc y Dwrlyn.

Although a spirited second half recovery provided some solace, the damage had been done in the opening period of this high tempo encounter, and the end result was inevitable if frustrating, given the magnificent display produced by virtually the same squad, when dispatching Pontypridd in that famous Blues Cup encounter last month.

Pentyrch Team

Ben Harrison Jones, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Ethan Denty, Aaron Tomlinson, Elliott Jones, Tom Burns, Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, George Ashby, Cai Stephens, Henry Davies, Chris Jones, Sam Fenton

Substitutes: Daniel Dagley, Owen Evans, Harry Jones

The tone of the game was set early on- the visitors content to use their strong and well drilled pack, driving forward to gain territorial advantage before attempting to switch the ball out to the wings. An early foray down the left flank provided an indication of things to come, with a brave touchline tackle from Tomos Angel preventing a near certain try. The Squirrels probing through the middle, began to exert pressure, and having been initially repelled by a timely Rhys Lynch clearance kick, they were given time to regroup close to the half way line before moving the ball out to the right, where lacklustre defending ultimately contributed to the opening try after five minutes.

Seemingly within seconds the lead had been doubled: hungrier at the breakdown, the visitors moved the ball down the left wing, outstripping the covering defence for pace, and evading a series of despairing tackles to touch down in the corner. The try was converted from a difficult angle: 0-12.

At this point the Tyrchs woke up to the danger and launched a series of spirited, if unrewarded raids, with Cai Stephens, Rhodri Davies Hughes and Ethan Denty to the fore.  A Sam Fenton tackle provided an opportunity for Henry Davies to gather on the left wing but there was insufficient space for him to demonstrate his pace and the attack was eventually smothered by sheer weight of numbers.

From the ensuing line out Rhiwbina against pushed forward, this time their centre scything through the middle of the home defence like Craig Bellamy with a five iron. A converted try ensued, and although the Tyrchs now tried took the game to the rampant visitors, at 19-0 the contest was effectively over as the half time whistle blew.

Second Half: Pentyrch substitutions

Owen Evans for Gwilym Rees, Daniel Dagley for Tom Burns, Harry Jones for Chris Jones

An opening second half salvo from the Squirrels ripped another hole in the middle of the home defence and yielded a further converted try. Sam Fenton, who had sustained an earlier injury, then departed with Chris Jones moving to full back.

As has so often been the case in these fixtures, the Tyrchs belatedly stirred themselves into life, stretching out to show glimpses of their skill, both at the breakdown, and with ball in hand. An excellent midfield burst gained territory, and with forwards combining well, the ball was fed to Elliott Jones who surged through to score a richly deserved try on the left hand touchline: 5-26.

The game now opened up a little with Cai Stephens and Rhys Lynch making good ground. Ben Harrison Jones was prominent in several forays, and although the contest was being played out largely in the middle third, a degree of parity had been achieved. Unfortunately, a further lapse of concentration resulted in another midfield break from Rhiwbina’s rampant centre partnership which enabled them to extend their lead to 33-5 with a converted try under the posts.

Substitution: Gwilym Rees for the injured Cai Stephens

The Tyrchs showed courage to come back from this onslaught, and forward pressure created another opportunity for Elliott Jones who raced through for his second try, which Chris Jones converted to reduce the deficit to 33-12.

As the game reached its conclusion the hosts moved forward again, but a towering clearance kick eventually yielded turnover ball for the visitors, which was recycled to generate a final score under the posts.

So, another salutary lesson delivered by Rhiwbina, who clearly seem to cast a spell over our boys whenever they meet. There is no doubt that the Tyrchs can give a much better account of themselves than this, and although the margin of defeat was, on this occasion, justified, the difference between the two sides in terms of potential is far closer. Self belief is an important factor – maybe if the name of the opposing side had been changed, the outcome would have been different?

Lest we forget in the midst of all this soul searching, the principal reason the boys play the game is for enjoyment, and the occasional heavy defeat should not be allowed to obscure that fact. There has been much to savour in the Tyrchs’ performances so far this season and doubtless much more to come. Heart of Gold, anyone?

FORWARDS MILESTONE DISPLAY PROVIDES PLATFORM FOR FAMOUS VICTORY

Pentyrch Team:

Forwards: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Gwilym Rees, Ethan Denty, Tom Burns, Elliot Jones, Nick Bowler,

Backs: Tom Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Henry Davies, Chris Jones, Sam Fenton

Substitutes:

Patrick Evans, Thomas Macdonald, Lewis Evans, Daniel Dagely, Owen Evans

This encounter had all the attributes of a classic cup tie; a visiting team with a big reputation, an early lead established by the favourites, a fantastic recovery by the underdogs, and finally heart-stopping drama at the death.

It was the best forward display of the season by far, characterised by “raging bull” charges at the opposition, a “go forward” attitude by all members of the pack and almost faultless recycling at the breakdown.  Ben Harrison Jones, as always, led from the front with Will Cole at his shoulder taking the play to the Ponty pack-and beyond-at every opportunity. Nick Bowler- Pentyrch’s own Magnificent Seven-had a fantastic game. The intelligent grafting and support work by forwards Gwilym Rees, Tom Burns, Ethan Denty, Aaron Tomlinson, Elliot Jones, and Lewis Evans, repeatedly gained precious territory and produced good quality ball to be taken on by themselves again or the backs.

The pressure exerted on the visitors’ midfield by centres Rhys Powell and Rhodri Davies Hughes was a telling factor. Rhodri, obviously enjoying his day out in the centre, was always anxious for contact-lest we forget where his heart lies-tackling and crashing through whenever a half opportunity presented itself. It was good to see Sam Fenton’s trademark penetrating runs from deep are back with a vengeance. The cover tackling by the wingers Henry Davies & Chris Jones was both technically adept and brave. The half backs Tomos Angell and Rhys Lynch combined well and demonstrated thoughtful control in their decision making.

First Half

The match had a stuttering start, both sides infringing at the breakdowns.  Tyrchs handling was uncertain at first as the cold took its toll. By contrast Pontypridd displayed more control and some superb handling as they spread the ball wide. For the Tyrchs Ben H Jones & Will Cole each made significant inroads through the visitor’s lines and Aaron Tomlinson stole visitor’s ball at ruck giving some hope.  However in an impressive passage of play, Ponty demonstrated their potential when the inside centre made a lovely break from half way to score under the posts. 0-7

The Tyrchs responded well with good pressure on the kick off catcher; Will Cole and B H Jones fronting up the offence. Tomos Angell fed Henry Davies on the left and he got to within 10 m before being forced into touch. Gwilym Rees at the front stole Ponty line-out ball and the signs were improving as the Tyrchs tentatively worked themselves in the game. Ponty used penalty possession well and looked threatening but strong tackling from Henry Davies and Aaron Tomlinson kept them pegged back. The Tyrchs, through Tom Burns and Aaron Tomlinson, turned over ball at the breakdown and looked to spread it but an interception on half way allowed their talented inside centre through. The Tyrch’s valiant covering efforts were in vain as the visitors converted the opportunity with a try in the corner. 0-12.

The situation looked ominous but the Tyrchs were not overawed and immediately raised their game. Nick Bowler cut down the left winger on the blindside, Ben H Jones stole line out ball and territory was gained slowly but surely via several phases From a visitors’ scrum 20 m out Nick Bowler put in another great tackle on the inside centre. The Tyrchs pack secured turn over ball which was despatched swiftly to winger Henry Davies, he was held but the pack was there as one to recycle again. Nick Bowler scooped the ball from the back of the ruck and crashed though to score to the right of the posts. A great moment for the boys-crucially just before the break.

Second Half

Perhaps recollections of the final wining period against the old enemy a fortnight earlier galvanised the Tyrch’s belief in themselves, whatever; as the match wore on that belief increased almost visibly.

The Tyrchs started well with pressure on the visitors following a good restart kick producing an attacking scrum. The first of a few very effective back row moves saw Tom Angell and Will Cole combining well up the right hand side. Good support and off-loading saw the move develop, through Ben H Jones, Elliot Jones and Nick Bowler. They were awarded a penalty and the ever hungry Talisman Ben H J relishing the challenge blasted up field, Ethan Denty and Will Cole took it on as territory was eaten up. Ponty regained possession but pressure by the Tyrchs backs turned them on their heels. The Tyrchs were 2 m out and Nick Bowler again broke away from a maul to cross over the line but the Tyrchs were called back for a scrum. Good quality ball flew swiftly through the hands of Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, and Sam Fenton to Henry Davies on the left wing. There were still 3 defenders to evade but the Region’s premier paceman has no equal when it comes to converting such half chances; 10-12 and the momentum now firmly with the Tyrchs.

Substitution: Lewis Evans for Tom Burns.

Ponty came back with some of the great handling they had displayed at the start and their pacy right winger, always a handful, was just caught again by Henry Davies. Tomos Angell gathered a loose ball in midfield and threaded through the melee; similar forays were made by Sam Fenton cutting back inside and crossing the gain line before off-loading to the supporting pack. The Tyrchs were now playing with cohesion and ever rising confidence. Will Cole probed with another great drive and Ethan Denty took it up to the 22. Lewis Evans charged down a clearance kick. Tomos Angell collected a spilt ball and again darted through the gaps as the play was all one way. Eventually Ethan Denty broke free from a maul 15 m out to crash over near the left hand corner. 15-12 with 10 minutes to go.

Ponty pressed several times but the Tyrchs pressure in midfield by the “impassables” Rhys Powell and Rhodri Davies Hughes forced them into errors and uncertainty. The visitors kept coming and with 2 minutes to go were awarded a penalty on their 22m. Excellent handling sent it wide to their flier on the left wing. He scorched 50 m up the touchline threatening to break Tyrch’s hearts but his opposite number Chris Jones is no slouch and made the match saving tackle to the rapturous applause of the home crowd.

However the drama was not over……………….

The clock having turned red and with play on the home 22 m, the Tyrchs attempted to put the ball dead unfortunately by illegal means on two occasions. They had to immediately defend two penalties in quick succession after twice having started victory celebrations prematurely. The manner in which they reacted and composed themselves to marshal a robust and organised defence both times was an apt demonstration- if any were needed-of the Tyrch’s mental toughness and concentration on the task in hand. Finally with no sign of panic Tyrchs won turnover possession and ball was transferred to winger Henry Davies. Henry will never get a bigger cheer for crossing the touchline ball-in-hand.

A thrilling match that will be remembered for a long time.  A big thanks to those on the bench; Owen, Daniel, Patrick, Tom and the injured Cai for their support.

Also grateful thanks to the man in the middle Mr Ian Buckland.

Pentyrch U12s 19 Rhiwbina U12s 39

24th January 2010

It had been a very long time indeed since the Tyrchs had taken the field in a competitive match. Come to think of it, way back then, Cardiff Blues still fancied their chances in the Heineken Cup, you could still drop into Borders for a cup of Cappuccino or a Rupert Annual, and Tiger Woods still had a sponsorship deal.

What finer opportunity to blow the cobwebs away than a fixture against long standing rivals, Rhiwbina? Well maybe…. probably a game too soon, but a strong mental and physical challenge ahead of next weekend’s Blues Cup encounter with Pontypridd RFC.

Pentyrch Squad:

Forwards: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Gwilym Rees, Ethan Denty, Owen Evans, Tom Macdonald, Daniel Dagely,  Lewis Evans, Nick Bowler, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Elliot Jones

Backs: Tom Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, George Ashby, Henry Davies Cai Stephens, Chris Jones, Will Fry, Patrick Evans

First Period

As anticipated, the visitors were out of the blocks sharply, the Tyrchs paying them more respect than probably due. After Nick Bowler had kept them at bay with a try saving tackle in the left hand corner, the Squirrels worked the ball swiftly out to the right wing and crashed through to score. An excellent touchline conversion confirmed their early superiority: 7-0.

The boys tried to take the game back to their opponents, but initially lacking slightly in self belief. Nevertheless, good breaks through the centre from Cai Stephens and George Ashby showed the way, and as the first period wore on, Rhys Lynch became increasingly influential, prompting a series of forays which tested the resilience of the Rhiwbina defence. Unfortunately, a lapse in the hosts’ concentration saw the visitors’ muscular centre burst through to score on the right wing once more- 12-0 as the first period drew to a close.

Second Period

Perhaps dispirited, the Tyrchs were rocked back during the first ten minutes of the second ‘third’ of this match as the Squirrels ran riot, notching up four tries to extend their lead to a seemingly unassailable 34-0. There were some gallant attempts to stem the tide, with Tomos Angell and Nick Bowler both tackling ferociously as the visitors tore down either flank- but at this point there could be no argument with the margin. Nevertheless, the Tyrchs did not fold, and gained territorial parity, which was eventually rewarded as Ben Harrison Jones forced his way over to reduce the deficit to 34-5 at the break.

Third Period

Buoyed by their new found self belief, the hosts hit back. Following some excellent interplay between Rhys Lynch & George Ashby, Will Fry was released on the left hand touchline, and raced through from halfway to score under the posts. Rhys Lynch added the conversion: 34-12.

The Tyrchs now had the momentum; their forwards finding fresh legs and inspiration, pushing the renowned Rhiwbina defence back into their 22. A third try seemed inevitable, and was duly delivered, courtesy of a splendid break by Cai Stephens through the middle. Rhys Lynch again delivered a faultless conversion to narrow the deficit to 34-19.

The final word, and deed, belonged to the visitors as their powerhouse centre pairing drove through to score again: final score 39-19.

A fair result, but as has often been the case in previous encounters with Rhiwbina, the Tyrchs started tentatively and had lost too much ground before discovering their self belief and confidence. If the middle period of the match represented something of a nadir, the zenith followed swiftly as the boys demonstrated skill, resilience and determination to claw their way back towards a respectable score line.

Llandaf U12s 19 v Pentyrch U12s 12

13th  December 2009

If there was any doubt about the U12s graduation to the full length game on a big pitch, this match surely put them to rest. The concentration levels were consistently high through the match. This was evidenced by long periods of uninterrupted cohesive play between backs and forwards often working through several phases before a turnover, infringement or touch brought the offence to halt. Defensive organisation was also very good- as it had to be. The Tyrchs kept the ambitious home side at bay for all but a couple of occasions. It was Llandaf’s dogged determination however that enabled them to come back from two scores down to win the match.

Pentyrch Squad

Forwards: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Ethan Denty,

Daniel Dagley, Elliot Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tom Burns, Nick Bowler, Owen Evans

Backs: Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, George Ashby, Chris Jones, Sam Fenton, Cai Stephens, Will Fry, Harry Jones, Patrick Evans

First Half

Llandaf started very brightly spreading the ball wide displaying great handling skills stretching the Tyrch’s defence several times in the opening quarter. Crucial tackles were executed in all areas of the field as Llandaf’s endeavour was thwarted. On one occasion the Tyrch’s defence was pierced in open play as a big forward blasted up the middle of the field but the brave efforts of Tomos Angell and Elliot Jones saved a certain try.  Pentyrch were starved of possession but they gradually worked themselves into the game, and their ball retention improved as the match progressed. Latterly Llandaf seemed to keep the ball close to the forwards rather than spread it; the Tyrchs easily dealt with this approach and they began to build momentum. They eventually worked their way up the right wing through a few phases and ball was recycled quickly from a ruck 10 m out, Rhodri Davies Hughes floated a beautiful pass out to the backs and winger Will Fry squeezed in the corner 5-0.

Ethan Denty collected loose ball in midfield, Rhys Powell and George Ashby combined well but the home side’s cover was sound and the Tyrchs were forced in touch. Pentyrch pressure on the opposition again produced a spilt ball which George Ashby picked up, cut through, and sprinted away to score just left of the posts. Rhys Lynch converted. Half time; 0-12 to the Tyrchs.

Second Half

The second half was started well by kick-off catcher Nick Bowler with Will Cole in support but Llandaf, obviously galvanised by the half time break, developed a penetrating backs move and scored under the posts, the conversion made the score 7-12.

The Tyrchs responded well and spent the next 15 minutes with all the territorial advantage, Ben H Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes and Will Cole driving powerfully for the line. Llandaf to their credit produced tackle after tackle to keep them in the game. The Tyrchs were awarded a penalty on half way, the home side were, however, allowed up early to pressurise the possession and they pounced on a loose ball, racing away to score under the posts. The conversion put them in front.

In the dying minutes the Tyrchs came back again but were repelled and then  the home side finished the game off as they started with good handling in the backs to put them free for the settling score; 19-12.

A disappointing result but the Tyrchs can take heart from the all round team performance which was in many ways the most impressive of the season. Indeed, at the end of the match the referee saw fit to play tribute to both sides for producing such a high quality game the likes of which he had not seen for a long time.

BLUES CUP 1st ROUND

St Peters U12s 0 v Pentyrch U12s 10

22nd November 2009

Tyrchs Storm the Gates

Bob Dylan apparently had it quite tough, growing up in the inhospitable Wintery climes of Northern Minnesota all those years ago, and it’s quite easy to see wherein lay the inspiration for iconic statements such as ‘Blowin in the Wind’ and ‘A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall’. If only Bob had spent last weekend in a bedsit off

Newport Road
, and within sight of St. Peters RFC, the weather would have undoubtedly stirred his muse to ensure the creation of a further album’s worth of record breaking doom laden laments.

Yes, it was rough out there folks, and it is to the enormous credit of our boys that they secured a comprehensive victory by utilising the ball as well as the biblical conditions would allow, with adaptive handling skills of which even Thierry Henri would have been proud.

Pentyrch Squad

Forwards: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Will Cole, Ethan Denty,

Gwilym Rees, Daniel Dagley, Elliot Jones, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tom Burns, Lewis Evans

Backs: Tomos Angell, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, George Ashby, Henry Davies, Chris Jones, Sam Fenton, Cai Stephens, Will Fry

First Half

The early exchanges were tense, and played out largely in the middle of the pitch, the ambition of both sides tempered by the referee’s desire to impose order.

The Tyrchs showed glimpses of their style with Will Cole and Ben Harrison Jones driving through the middle, sucking in the home defence before allowing Rhys Lynch to move the ball out along the line. First time up the Rocks saw the danger, but the Tyrchs maintained the pressure and swift hands from Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell and George Ashby created space for Henry Davies, who, from 20 yards out, raced through the gears with a beautifully angled run to open the score in the right hand corner. 5-0 to Pentyrch.

The hosts responded with a probing kick from the restart and surged forward, their momentum stifled by an excellent tackle from Henry Davies, forcing his opponent into touch. Regaining the initiative, the Tyrchs moved the ball out to the left, Tomos Angell feeding the back line, and following swift interplay releasing Chris Jones who sped down the left hand touchline, gaining 20 yards before being dragged into touch on halfway. Having repelled the initial St Peters advance, the Tyrchs built a bridgehead in the middle third, Ethan Denty, Daniel Dagley and Gwilym Rees winning vital ball in the loose, and the inevitable Rhodri Davies Hughes hoovering up when danger threatened.

The mood was tense, the weather bleak, as the first of a series of arctic hailstorms lashed the pitch. The Rocks kicked up to halfway but knocked on: with advantage played, Tomos Angell gathered and fed Rhys Powell whose quick pass found George Ashby- he saw the gap and sped through from half way, the despairing defenders unable to match his pace or endeavour, as he grounded the ball under the posts, doubling the advantage with a superb solo effort. 10-0 to the Tyrchs.

There was still time for the hosts to edge forward, as first Henry Davies and then Sam Fenton smothered the danger with excellent tackles. Half time - and a significant advantage secured.

Second Half

Substitutions: Cai Stephens for Chris Jones, Lewis Evans for Daniel Dagley

The rain fell hard, the wind raged relentlessly but the Tyrchs stood up to the elements, and the inevitable riposte from their respected opponents. Injury saw the departure of George Ashby who was replaced by Will Fry, as the back line was reshuffled. The early period of the second half was played out close to the half way line, the hosts looking for an early breakthrough, but sheer concentration and the defensive excellence of Aaron Tomlinson kept them at bay. The game developed into a forward-based war of attrition, and Eliott Jones and Lewis Evans joined the fray to great effect.

The Rocks probed right and left, seeking a way through, and just when it seemed they would roll on to the Tyrch’s 22 metres line, a posse of eager warriors blocked their path: Sam Fenton, Gwilym Rees and Cai Stephens tackling tenaciously for the cause.

Substitution: Tom Burns for Ethan Denty

This became an exercise in containment, a splendid tackle by Tom Burns epitomising the boys’ approach, and when the wind dropped for just a moment, the booming inspirational voice of Paul Marley echoed around the ground, exhorting the Tyrchs to maintain their discipline and concentration.

The storm had been weathered; the contest won, and although there were few try- scoring opportunities in the second half, this was a mature display, and 19 weary bodies celebrated at the final whistle.

A game played in excellent spirit between two well drilled sides. Remarkably this was the fourth match played between the clubs this season: only November and 3 more encounters than most people earn with St Peter in an eternity……

Seconds out Round 3...........

Pentyrch U12s 25 St Peters U12s 10

8th November 2009

Pentyrch lost to St Peters In the first match of the season, a narrow victory in the district tournament followed so a close contest was expected in this third meeting.

The Tyrchs worked well to produce a confidence building win ahead of the Blues cup tie against the Rocks in a fortnight’s time. The game was hard fought and very close in the first half although the Tyrchs were always in front. Their superior handling in the blustery conditions enabled them to convert their possession into points. Will Cole made a massive contribution, and George Ashby finished off great handling moves with two long distance tries towards the end to put the result beyond doubt.

First Half

With the wind at their backs the Tyrchs enjoyed most of the territory in the first half. The boys showed early promise using the ball to good effect; the backs threatened to break free as they advanced up to the 22m but St Peters managed to contain them. Further pressure on the defence produced more ball, George Ashby probed but St Peters resisted. A clearance kick was well fielded by winger Chris Jones who sprinted past a couple of defenders before being forced out. Will Cole stole the line out ball and drove hard for the line from 10 m out to open the scoring.

It was Will Cole again who caught the restart kick and made several hard yards up the middle. The Tyrchs forced their way into the 22 but St Peters countered and made it to half way before Sam Fenton put in a characteristic crunching tackle to half the offence. Elliot Jones was up very fast on the Rocks’ second phase ball forcing them onto the back foot. Gwilym Rees made an important tackle in loose play; Rhodri Davies Hughes pounced on the ball to force the visitor backwards again.

The Tyrch’s were awarded a scrum some 18 m out in-front of the posts.  Tom Angell used the good quality ball with a swift pass to Rhys Lynch.  A hybrid move from the outside half involving a dummy scissors and a missed pass put the ball in the hands of winger Henry Davies who continued his fantastic strike rate with his 7th try in four games.

St Peters responded and worked their way via penalties in quick succession to within striking distance, a strong running forward broke through several tackles and scored to reduce the deficit to five 5 points;10-5 at half time.

Second Half

St Peters started well and were in the home 22 until Rhodri snatched possession; he was brought down but popped the ball neatly to Nick Bowler who sprinted half the length of the field before being caught on St Peters 22m.  The Rocks regrouped but good pressure in midfield allowed George Ashby to collect a loose ball, the forwards worked well to support him and Will Cole ripped away from the maul striding through the middle of the pitch. Tyrchs penalty ball was spun out to Rhys Powell, his trademark dummy put him through but the covering defence was sound.

The Tyrchs won scrum ball against the head and Nick Bowler broke away but was hauled down just 5 m out from the line. St Peters conceded a penalty and Ethan Denty blasted through for the try;15-5

The visitors came back strongly but telling tackles from Henry Davies and Nick Bowler curtailed the Rocks advance. Daniel Dagely made a half break but was caught before the Tyrchs could capitalise.

The Rocks hadn’t given up and they forced the Tyrchs into touching down behind their own line. From the scrum-five they broke through on theblindside to put themselves back within a score.

At the restart kick Nick Bowler was up quickly to smother the catcher. The pressure won the Tyrchs a scrum in the middle of the pitch; good quality ball was despatched swiftly along the line to outside centre George Ashby, he left the defence for dead to score under the posts-a thrilling try.

The Tyrchs dealt with the restart well, Will Cole catching and then driving through several tackles, Ben Harrison Jones in support took it up to the 22 m. The ball was recycled expertly and Tomos Angell released the backs, and again George Ashby rounded the sparse defence to score his second and seal the match.

Pentyrch U12s 15 Merthyr U12s 15

18th October 2009

After the bleak storm ravaged scenes at Sully last week, it was back home to the maturing sun and winnowing winds of Autumn…

First Half: Pentyrch Team

Aaron Tomlinson, Ben Harrison Jones,  Gwilym Rees, Ethan Denty, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Elliott Jones, Lewis Evans, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, George Ashby, Patrick Evans, Will Fry, Henry Davies, Sam Fenton

A brisk start with Rhys Lynch & Rhys Powell developing a strong understanding in their debut outing as halfback pairing. In the opening minutes the ball was spread out wide and after Patrick Evans had been wrestled to the ground, the Tyrchs pack took the ball on with Will Cole & Ethan Denty prominent in several phases.

The visitors cleared their lines with a relieving kick to touch but Sam Fenton reacted quickly throwing fielding the line out before switching the ball cross field, and a series of slick passes released Will Fry who sped down the right hand touchline to open the scoring 5-0.

The hosts maintained focus and although Merthyr gained territory, a Rhys Powell interception served as a warning. The visitors regained the ball but stout defence kept them at bay before turnover ball gave the Tyrchs the chance to release the backs- the two Rhys’ combining with Sam Fenton and ultimately Henry Davies who raced down the left hand touchline to double the lead.

Merthyr responded strongly and began to dominate possession, controlling the centre of the field and edging forward steadily. Their industry was rewarded as a drive near the left hand touchline yielded a try just before half time.

Half Time: Pentyrch 10 Merthyr 5

Second Half Substitutions: Tom Burns, Dan Dageley, Owen Evans & Tom Macdonald for Lewis Evans, Gwilym Rees, Aaron Tomlinson & Rhodri Davies Hughes

The Steelmen carried on where they had left off and took the game to their hosts with cohesive forward play, and as their backs grew in confidence it was no real surprise when they crossed to level the scores at 10 all inside 5 minutes.

The game now developed into a forward tussle, played largely in the middle third. Injury took its toll with Owen Evans retiring to be replaced by Aaron Tomlinson.

The boys maintained concentration but in spite of exemplary displays by Ben Harrison Jones & Will Cole, the backs saw little of the ball. Eventually, their confidence burgeoning, Merthyr broke down the Tyrchs defence again, to score from a forward drive on the right hand side.

Substitution: Rhodri Davies Hughes for Elliott Jones

The boys appeared despondent but stuck to their task and gradually the forwards regained control, for Rhys Lynch & George Ashby to gain territory and momentum. The proverbial fat lady [and a close relative] were clearing their throats when pressure created the space for quick ball to do the damage- the two half backs and combining well before releasing Sam Fenton, whose final delayed pass to Henry Davies gave the flying winger enough time and space to race through the gears with a sixty yard sprint to touchdown in the corner and level the score with the final play – 15 all- honours even!

A fair outcome and a sound result given that our coaches took the opportunity to experiment, by switching the boys across a number of key positions which will undoubtedly prove hugely beneficial as the season progresses.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather.....”                        John Ruskin 1819-1900

(“My ........................”foot”  .......”                             Jim Royal 1939-)

John Ruskin obviously didn’t get out much, and I’m certain he was never on the sidelines watching a Leigh Halfpenny kick from the Bristol Channel having to write a report when land, sea, and sky merge into one. However he must have known something about rugby as the following is also attributed to him: “Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of intelligent effort”.- When concentration levels were high the Tyrchs produced some periods of very high quality play.

I’m afraid reader, that most of the observations made on the game were washed away into the sea.  The bare facts and some general recollections are all that are on offer herein.

The game was very entertaining and both sides made valliant efforts to spread the ball in the miserable weather. The Tyrchs superior handling and their determination in open play was the telling factor that provided them with a comfortable victory. Sully never gave up and made it a competitive encounter until the final whistle.

Ben H Jones was at his rampaging best and helped himself to a hat trick of tries. Will Cole was always a handful in the loose, and he also crossed for a score. Henry Davies on the wing converted his opportunities – 2 tries. Rhodri Davies Hughes worked hard at the breakdown and had a useful spell in midfield. Tom Angell and Rhys Lynch at Half back combined well releasing the backs for some great penetrating moves. Rhys Powell ghosted past the home midfield a few times with silky running and deceptive hands.

Aaron Tomlinson was always up fast to pressure the home side in possession. Daniel Dagely and Gwilym Rees worked hard in the mauls. Telling tackles by Chris Jones and Sam Fenton snuffed out Sully’s attacks out wide. Owen Evans again nicked a couple against the head. Elliot Jones had a couple of good breaks making hard yards on each occasion. Congratulations to the novice Patrick Evans who equipped himself well both in the backs and in the pack.

27th September 2009

IT AIN’T HALF HOT MUM

Pentyrch U12s won a hard fought match against a team that put up a very good forwards performance.  The best quality rugby by both sides was played in the first quarter. Thereafter handling errors increased to give the game a scrappy appearance however there some very good passages of play that resulted in good tries for both sides. The Tyrch’s good passages outnumbered the visitors’  and they ran out deserved winners. No doubt the heat affected play but no one on the sideline was complaining!

First Half

The Tyrchs got an in ideal start when Henry Davies on the right wing collected a pass from a set piece in the first minute and sprinted away from the Barry 10 m line to open his account for the season. Within a couple of minutes of the restart the Tyrchs stole the ball at the breakdown, it was swiftly transferred out to the right wing flier on half way; no contest: 10-0, and it looked like Plan A would prove very lucrative.

Barry did not roll over however and responded well to create a very closely fought contest. They soon established a good position in Pentyrch territory. The Tyrchs conceded two penalties in quick succession for handling in the ruck giving Barry encouragement and inviting them to the line.  Barry knocked on when 15 m out and a Sam Fenton clearance kick from the scrum eased the pressure. The Tyrchs were up quick on the catcher and Will Cole ripped the ball and drove upfield. From a tap penalty Ben Jones with Gwilym Rees in support smashed their way through up to half way.

Barry won quality ball at a scrum and their backs advanced via their winger  to the Tyrch’s 10 m; the ball was passed back inside and the centre broke though several despairing tacklers. A try appeared a certainty until Sam Fenton’s fingers caught the bottom of his dangling shirt to bring him down 3 m out- there’s a lesson for you! The Tyrchs relief was short-lived however, Barry were awarded a penalty at the breakdown and they worked it quickly out to the winger who crossed for the try 10-5.

Barry then enjoyed extended periods with the ball during which they displayed some strong running but handling let them down and they were unable to use the possession to best effect. Indeed handling errors crept in on both sides and the quality of play deteriorated a little. On the positive side however tackling and spoiling was very effective for both teams.  Hooker Owen Evans made a nuisance of himself in the Barry scrums often winning ball against the head.

Henry Davies gathered a loose pass and straightened up well to threaten but Barry’s cover snuffed out the attack. The visitors broke through on a few occasions but sound tackles from Henry Davies, Chris Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes kept them out. Barry continued to enjoy territory and Pentyrch were forced to run from behind their line on the stroke of half time.

Second Half

Substitutions

Lewis Evans and Daniel Dagely on for Tom Burns and Owen Evans

Sam Fenton moved  to No. 9

Rhys Powell moved to No. 10.

An early opportunity arose after the break when George Ashby set off on a looping run from his 10 m up to the Barry 22, Ethan Denty accepted the neat offload and nearly broke free but was edged into touch.

Barry’s forwards worked well in the loose and turned over Tyrchs’ possession several times at the break down. They combined well up the right wing but crunching tackles from Chris Jones and Sam Fenton curtailed the move. Barry  continued to threaten and the Tyrchs stood off whilst a centre pierced the defence on half way to score a well deserved try under the posts; 10-10.

Injured Ethan Denty was replaced by Owen Evans.

As they showed the previous week the Tyrchs showed great heart in their response. From a scrum on half way Sam Fenton at No.9 released the backs Rhys Powell and Nick Bowler, Nick held off two or three would be tacklers forcing his way through midfield on a chest busting run to the line. Sam Fenton converted; 17-10.

Barry were not finished and strong running allowed them to break the Tyrchs line, they were forced out wide however making the kick a tall order so Pentyrch maintained a slender lead- 17-15.

Pressure on the catcher from the restart put the visitors on the back foot. Their clearance kick was fielded by Nick Bowler who passed to Henry Davies. Chris Jones and then George Ashby took it up to within 15 m. Rhodri Davies Hughes made hard yards from break down, Will Cole took it on and forwards Aaron Tomlinson and Tom Macdonald in support enabled quick recycling for the backs. George Ashby stepped inside for the half break and stepped again as the line beckoned but was held just short. Rhodri in support picked up, took off, and, some time later, landed over the line in his signature celebration to seal the match; 22-15.

'TYRCHS REACH QUARTER FINALS OF DISTRICT UNDER 12 TOURNAMENT

After slipping to defeat on their 15 a side debut last weekend, coaches and players alike were fully prepared to regard Sunday’s district tournament as little more than another stage in the learning process. After all, Summer was hardly over, the deep tan Phil Angell acquired during a scorching hot week in a caravan in Bala had yet to fade, and the Under 12’s had trained less frequently than Gavin Henson during the close season.

The squad made its way to Barry RFC, depleted by injury and illness, with just 18 players reporting for duty. After an early shock in the opening group fixture, they recovered well and played superbly to secure a well deserved quarter final berth, before finally succumbing to battle fatigue and David Evans’ well drilled Penarth team.

First Pool Match: Pentyrch 10 Llandaff  20

Team: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Eliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Daniel Dagley, Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Nick Bowler, George Ashby, Will Fry, Chris Jones.

The Tyrchs were caught cold straight from the kick off as the Llandaff Number 8 captured the ball and raced down the left hand touchline to score before patrons in the hospitality suite had had the time to baste their bacon rolls with ketchup.

Rhys Lynch  and Ben Harrison Jones attempted to shake the boys from their lethargy with trademark breaks but within minutes their opponents had regained the initiative, switching the ball to the right and bursting through to double the lead: 10-0.

Finally responding to the challenge, the Tyrchs strung some decent moves together, with Tom Burns prompting the back line and Ethan Denty prominent in all phases of play. The ball was flipped out to George Ashby who showed pace and strength, running through to touch down from 25 metres out for his debut try in the black and white strip.

Just when the balance of power appeared to be shifting, Llandaff sneaked another try from what appeared to be a forward pass: 15-5 at half time.

Second Half Substitutions: Lewis Evans & Owen Evans for Will Fry and Dan Dagley

Groundhog Day as Llandaff again scored straight from the restart- 20-5!

The Tyrchs began to assert themselves in the scrum and through some increasingly confident handling moves- Elliott Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes pushing the pack forward, and Nick Bowler and Rhys Powell using guile to gain further ground. Llandaff were resilient and stymied the attacks before finally cracking under pressure as Ethan Denty forced his way through to narrow the deficit to 20-10.

With the clock ticking down Will Fry replaced the injured Chris Jones, and although parity had been gained in terms of possession, the shock of early tries conceded in both halves proved insurmountable.

Second Pool Match: Pentyrch 15 CRICC 0

Team: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Tom Macdonald, Eliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Rhys Powell, Nick Bowler, George Ashby, Will Fry, Lewis Evans.

Buoyed by their performance in the latter stages of the opening game the Tyrchs took the game to their opponents from the off: Ben Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes leading the line. They gradually edged forward, Lewis Evans and Will Fry making ground on the wing, and when Rhys Lynch switched the ball Will Cole was on hand to burst through under the posts to open the score.

A superb break from George Ashby created space for debutant Will Fry who sold an outrageous dummy before haring through to double the lead: 10-0.

CRICC responded well but the Tyrchs were able to absorb the pressure, Gwilym Rees, Aaron Tomlinson and Ben Jones using their experience to close their opponents down as the half concluded.

Second Half Substitutions: Chris Jones, Daniel Dagley & Owen Evans for Lewis Evans, Aaron Tomlinson & Tom Macdonald

More pressure from the Tyrchs, but CRICC held out. Nick Bowler, Rhys Lynch and Daniel Dagley were prominent in attack, and the relentless pressure final took its toll- a desperate, towering clearance kick was fielded by full back Chris Jones 10 metres out, and he raced through the gap to extend the Tyrchs lead to 15-0.

Substitution: Tom Macdonald for Gwilym Rees

The pace of the game was maintained, with George Ashby constantly creating holes in the CRICC defence. Owen Evans drove the ball on and a well timed Rhys Lynch pass almost allowed Will Cole through the gap.

The game ended with the Tyrchs forward dominating possession to secure a well deserved clean sheet.

Third Pool Match: Pentyrch 15 St Peters 10

Team: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Gwilym Rees, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Eliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Daniel Dagley Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Nick Bowler, George Ashby, Will Fry, Lewis Evans Chris Jones.

An early setback as the boys conceded another first minute try- the St. Peter’s centre breaking through no less than five tackles to touch down under the posts!

Rhys Lynch led an outstanding recovery prompting his backs, switching the ball in both directions, and allowing George Ashby and Nick Bowler to gain steady ground. Possession ensured territorial superiority, and eventually after several phases of play, Will Cole surged through for a superb equalising try: 5-5.

A fascinating contest developed with both sets of backs looking to use the ball adventurously – a swift Tom Burns pass released Messrs Lynch, Jones and Bowler, but the Rocks defence held firm. The initiative swung both ways and eventually it was St Peters who found a way through, in spite of a sterling rearguard effort : 10-5.

Back came the Tyrchs- Gwilym Rees and Ben Jones pushing forward before releasing George Ashby who broke through to the 22 metre line. Recycled ball from Rhodri Davies Hughes created space and Nick Bowler and Will Fry edged closer. Chris Jones gained a further 5 metres before being held up, and Aaron Tomlinson capped off the move to score under the posts to rapturous applause. Half Time- 10-10!

The second half continued at the same pace- Will Fry made a try saving tackle and it looked as if the Rocks were about to lay siege, when an inspirational pass from Rhys Lynch created space for Nick Bowler who darted from right to left, before spinning the ball to Chris Jones who raced 20 metres down the touchline, cutting inside to score and put the Tyrchs ahead 15-10.

The game was far from over and both sides contested the ball furiously- Will Cole was held up 10 metres out, and at the other end George Ashby, Daniel Dagley, and Ethan Denty worked overtime to keep their opponents out. Rhodri Davies Hughes epitomised the Trojan work ethic and gamely played on through injury before succumbing in the final 5 minutes, to be replaced by the eager Owen Evans.

As the game drew to a close the Tyrchs forced the Rocks back into their 22, Lewis Evans, Elliott Jones and Owen Evans making sure there was no way through. One final foray down the right wing almost brought another score but as Nick Bowler was bundled into the touch the referees whistle blew- a great win, and a huge turnaround against opponents who had beaten the Tyrchs 2 tries to nil just seven days earlier!

Team: Ben Harrison Jones, Aaron Tomlinson, Tom Macdonald, Will Cole, Rhodri Davies Hughes, Elliott Jones, Ethan Denty, Daniel Dagley Tom Burns, Rhys Lynch, Nick Bowler, George Ashby, Will Fry, Lewis Evans Chris Jones.

By now injury and illness had further depleted the squad but they hobbled on, and perhaps inevitably, fell to defeat against the fancied and unbeaten Penarth side.

Early pressure yielded tries, and weak tackling was ruthlessly exposed as the favourites raced into a 10-0 lead.

Dan Dagley and Tom Macdonald responded well to the exhortations of Ben Jones and Rhodri Davies Hughes, but with pressure mounting and energy levels diminishing, it proved increasingly difficult to keep Penarth at bay.

Rhys Lynch and Nick Bowler were constantly in the thick of the action, and were  unlucky not to reduce the deficit, but it was Penarth who surged back to score a third try before the break, effectively ending the contest.

Second Half Substitutions: Owen Evans and Gwilym Rees for Rhodri Davies Hughes and Tom Macdonald

A spirited start to the second half failed to yield any points and although the backs continued to pass the ball around well, they could not generate the pace to cross the gain line. Defensively the Tyrchs were weak although this was due in no small part to the cumulative impact of a series of knocks and cuts. With no cover left on the bench the walking wounded played out the final scenes bravely, but inevitably conceding two further tries, and falling to a 25-0 defeat.

Notwithstanding the quarter final, this had been a terrific effort and major leap forward for the Tyrchs as they gradually adapt to the 15 man game. There was a great deal to savour here, and in particular a superb display against St Peters which showed just how much had been learned in one short week. So, in spite of some misgivings about the seemingly ludicrous timing of this tournament, a great effort, and solid platform for the season ahead.

13th September 2009

ROCKS SOLID IN DEFENCE

Whilst the crowd revelled in the heat at the start of another Indian Summer (you heard it here first!) the 16 man squad of the Tyrchs had to sweat it out for 60 minutes for the first time on a full size pitch. The first two of the three periods saw high quality play and commitment on both sides. The heat took its toll in the third period and to some extent the game lost some of its shape, however the performance offers much encouragement for the season ahead. The defensive displays of both sides were impressive as the score demonstrates but St Peters won the day with two tries, from distance, out wide.

First Period

The majority of play was confined to the middle third as neither side could establish superiority. Some fine tackles were executed; inevitably centre Nick Bowler was amongst the first to scythe down his opposite number. From a scrum on the Tyrchs 22m outside half Rhys Lynch exploited a gap on the blind side and took play up to the half way. The Tyrchs forwards advanced play further up-field but eventually possession was lost. A long clearance kick was well fielded by full back Chris Jones and with Nick Bowler in support they regained some ground. Tomos Angell probed around the scrum and breakdowns. A blindside move from a set piece allowed Tom Burns to cruise over the gain line and Will Cole took it on making several yards before being held.

The game wavered back and forth with the sound tackling of both sides being enough to snuff out various initiatives, forwards Aaron Tomlinson and Tom Macdonald working well in the loose.  St Peters had several opportunities; one such occasion saw the ball out wide to the winger who appeared free but Chris Jones did enough to edge him into touch. Late in the first period the home side won turn over ball, put a few phases together and eventually broke through out wide on the 10 m line leaving the Tyrchs despairing defence behind to make the score 5-0.

Second Period

The Tyrchs continued to search for a breakthrough employing new set piece moves. Following a scrum Rhys Powell found a gap, Rhodri Davies Hughes in support took it on, the ball was recycled then Lewis Evans on the wing almost cut free but again St Peters’ defence was up to the challenge. The home side then developed several phases slowly gaining ground to within striking distance but hard work by Ethan Denty, Will Cole and Owen Evans in the Tyrchs’ pack kept them out. Chris Jones and Rhys Powell also produced telling tackles in the backs. A try line clearance kick from Rhys Lynch and the quick follow up from Nick Bowler follow up relieved the pressure.

Ben Harrison Jones from a short penalty on the opposition 10m blasted through first and second tackles before going to ground, recycled ball was sent via Elliot Jones to Tomos Angell and Nick Bowler and Angell again on the loop but the Tyrchs couldn’t round the defence. The Tyrchs were within 10 m when the whistle blew for the end of the period. Still 5-0 to the Rocks.

Third Period

Matt Stewart made an encouraging break early on and Nick Bowler, hungry for action tore away but again the defence covered well and St Peters won turn-over ball.  They worked the ball to the right flank and broke through from half way to double their lead; 10-0.

The Tyrchs responded well with the backs pressurising St Peters defensive possession in midfield. Ben H J made an excellent tackle when St Peters again threatened to cut away. Nick Bowler made a half break, Ben  H J and Will Cole drove effectively up the field. Elliot Jones on the pick-and-go from the breakdown made 15 m, the ball was recycled and the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum and then a penalty 5 m out. Ben H Jones drove for the line but a massive defensive effort held him up. Rhys Powell was fed from the 5 m scrum, Will Cole took it on and blasted for the line. St Peters rallied, repelled the advance and forced the Tyrchs back some 20 m of hard-won territory. The Tyrchs continued to pressure but the Rocks were solid and denied them a consolation try.

Final score 10-0.
