SWALEC DIVISION 4 SOUTH EAST CHAMPIONS 2008-09

 Match Reports

Sat 2nd May away to Ferndale. one point required from the  game, all on tender hooks as the various means of the one point have been discussed at length by all at the club, lose (by less than 7 points =1) draw =(2), Win= (4), win with 4 tries or more= (5) or lastly lose but score at least 4 tries=(1) what ever the result we are going back up to division 3 next season.

Well a nervous start to a must win game with lots of panic passing and dropped balls in the first quarter, saw a solo try by S Cole run in under the posts & Beanie to con, we then went into give them the ball mode as Ferndale scored a try & con, a further M Bean try in the corner gave us a half time lead of 12-7. A few words of wisdom came from the coaches half time chat and we started in a positive mood and Capt J Steel ran in a try which started well in to our half of the field. R Thomas then ran a fifity yarder in under the posts for Bean to con, Ferndale then came into the game and the heavier forwards saw them score a corner post try. Our very own James Hook ran in the next with R Thomas scoring his second of the day for Bean to convert, a further corner try by the home side saw The Tyrch's home to win the game 17-36 and take the CHAMPIONSHIP title for the season with a margin of 4 points over Heol y Cyw

Sat 25th Apr home to Taffs Well( our last home game of the season), well we did gain promotion from todays game, we will need to win, draw, lose by less than seven points to be champions at Ferndale ( one point requred). We also retained
the John Llewelyn Cup, which has stayed the Parc y Dwrlyn, since it''s re-introduction back in 2003
The game saw the Tyrchs did go 5 points down, this did seem to stimulate the boys into a more postive mood and tries by T Marley (birthday boy) and C Moss in a very positve 10 min period + a M bean  pen saw us gain the advantage at half time being 13-5 up, coaches talk half time must of worked a bit as T Marley made it a double for him with a try gained by some good work from the back rowers via some loose play con by M Bean, a couple of yellow cards came into play after a bit of fracare between the sides, after an early tackle on Marley, it took some time to get the last and bonus scoring try to make Division 3 a definate next season,  this happened in the last min of the game and J Hook crashed over to seal a well deservered victory and a red card for No 3 Taffs Well for verbal abuse of the referee.

The last league game is precided by a semi final of the East District (SA Brain) cup against Llanishen on Tuesday at Llandaff RFC 6:15pm KO.  which we lost 26-21 and if we had a full side we could have been in the final!!!!!!!

Weds 22nd Home to Ferndale

Conditions very dry & hard, ball thrown about by all involved on both sides, The tyrchs were up for this as in the first set of moves B Davies ran in the first  try and M Bean kicked the con, further tries by N (BILL) Gill, con by Beanie and a corner flag try from G Eyres against two from ferndale saw us in the lead at half time by 19-10.
The second half was bit more one way traffic with a further two tries from N Gill, a corner try from the hard working No 6 L Edwards, a rare running try for front rower R Allen, and C Moss ran in two also and with M Bean getting 3 con, 2 pen the final score was 53-15, Ferndale did score one futher try and worked very had to get a bonus point, but some stern defence by the The Tyrch's stopped them at every attempt.

Apr 18th, Home to Dowlais,
Well nice to see a back up of players who wanted to paly rugby at the vlub instead of going off to watch the BLUES , as we did put ourselves under some pressure early in the game and it took some good defence work to see us through in the first ten mins, after that it was  somewhat one sided in that we scored some good first half tries (D Ince, L Edwards, N Gill with a 2 con and  a pen from the boot of the Bean man) if there  had been a TMO watching a further two tries  may have been recorded before H/T (22-0), second half was mush the same with  tries at regular spacing to see 2 from C Moss and M Bean scoring after a full length of the field movement he also added a con to his try to make the final score 39-0.

Apr 15th Home to Tonyrefail, Nice dry conditions which suited the Tyrchs as we all know they do like to run the bll around and with 3 first half tries by N Gill, G Eyres, C Moss and a 2 con + a pen by M Bean was just about the right score as we had our foot flat  down on the metasl for the first 20mins and then we started a kicking game (just like you see on telly) and we lost some composure.
A few strong words by Ruggs at 1/2 time saw us take the accelerator back down to the floor and with some very good angles of running between the whole side,  there were tries by G Eyres, H Giffiths (2) C Moss and Beanie was back to kicking
form and converted all of them making a score line of 50-5 at the close. We have Dowlais as visitors this Saturday as we reversed the fixtures back in Dec when we had those very wet winter days

Sat 4th Apr

Abercwmboi away and after some robust play the home side saw a pen in the first 5mins and after this they were not in the game, the Tyrchs ran in two first half tries and a further pen by the home side gave a misguided score at half time of 6-12, the second half wqas dominated by some very robust play by all in the side and a further  5 tries saw a bonus point win by 6-47 the scores were. C Moss, J Hook, J Steel, T Marley, L Edwards, T Mullins(jogged over from 55m) and lastly M Bean with a try and  2 pen and cons x 3 to complete th scoring

Sat 28th Mar

Home to Llantwit Major who fought very hard to stop the young Tyrch's geting their deserved win 17-10, a try by N Gill after some  20min a con by M Bean saw the boys home in the first half  by 7-3 even tough to of us who were standing in he corner would have sworn that D Ines had score a very good try in the corner, ref thought he was in touch so no try awarded, the second half started much the same, then a break by young T Marley saw a try/con to see the last half hour home in some better style, a pen by Bean some 5 mins later, the score 17-3 was about right and the home supporters wer hoping to see a few more tris to gt the bonus point, but Llantwit had a dirfferent plan and scored to make the 17-10 and a very difficult last five mins

Thurs 12th Mar away to Taffs Well

Dispite playing a lot of our younger squad players, they did the Tyrchs proud and won 29-14 for a bonus point win, no other information available at present.

7th Mar
Home to Porth on a very wet day and after some 5 mins we were 0-5 point down after a conceding a push over try, which was the only try in a very hard game for the Tyrch's, M Bean kicked a pen and at half time we were down 3-8 which was the final score, if only the ref had used the laws of the game in the last mins as we saw our winger beening high tackled a meter out which would have normally ben a try or even a pen try, a yellow card was issued but not a try, so Port had the double over us, if only it had been a dry day!!!!!

28th Feb

Away to bottom of the table Cefn Coed, although the half time score would not of said their postion being true, as after a flurry of attacks C Moss went over within 3 mins for and unconverted try, then we decided to confuse the spectators by dropped ball  or a forward pass an off side or a penalty for many close up infingements, which after 40 + min the score was 0-5 to the Tyrchs, Capt for the day M Thomas must have rallied the troops at half time as we scored with a L Edwards try within  5 mins of the re-start and a H Griffiths  push over try with a J Hook con seemed to us on the line a Bonus point was on it's way but a lot more mis-hanled movements saw the home side keep us out until the end.

Next week home to Porth in a must win game.

21st Feb

Our game against Ferndale was postponed due to the SWALEC comp, with CHSOB in the same position the two clubs agreed to re-arrange today fixture with the result of a hard fought home win by the Tyrchs 13-7 if the game had been awarded on possession and territory we would have won 40-15 but the old boys defence really done the work and shut out all efforts to cross the line in the first half with a single M Bean penalty for the Tyrchs efforts. The second half saw a try early on by Capt J Steel as he charged over from a quick tapped pen, the old boys then put twenty min of pressure on our line and a converted try was their reward, for the last 10 mins of the game the Tyrchs placed more pressure on the away side with the result of a charged down kick been converted to a try by R Thomas making the final score 13-7, next wek we are away to Cefn Coed

31st Jan

Away to Heol y Cyw and a good hard fought win in many ways as we lost D Innes after 10 mins to a punch and No 8 O'Drisscoll for the home side had a 10 min rest. The Tyrchs had a lot of pressure placed on them and concided try and a further try some ten mins later to see the home side in control, then a break by new married C Moss on the wng a chip ahead and a good follow up by M Bean saw a try in the corner in the dying seconds of the first half.

Second half and the Tyrch's placed lots of pressure on the home side and there  was an injury to L Rammage and saw K Ruggles replacing him and in the first 2 mins being on the  home  No 6 took a swing at him and was Red carded as he had a yellow in the last mins of the first half, This gave the Tyrch's a lift and further presuure on the home line saw young T Marly power his way over from 15m out, the earlier penalty by M Bean saw the score line at 10-13 and dispite lots of home pressure this YOUNG Tyrch's side came home with the 4 league points.

 Sat 24th Jan

Out of the plate and Tonyrefail deserved they win as the out powered the Tyrchs for major phases of the game and with a try count of four to one we can only wish them the very best in the next game. The Tyrchs again fielded a young side and the strength of the home pack showed as they powered a pushover try in the second half to add to the first two in the 10 mins of the game. M bean scored all of the Tyrchs points with 4 pens and a try late in the second half. We will have to improve for next weeks away game against second placed Heol y Cyw

13th Sept

Pentyrch started this game as if there was nothing on it, with numourous loose play penalties being given away, (something we must improve on) the Tyrchs were 13-0 down after about 20 mins, when Senghenydd had scored their try from some 75m out (we were sleeping).

At the restart we did start to put pressure on the home side and as a result scrum half C Moss dived on a loose ball at the line to make us 13-5, this seemed to put a spakle into the side and we chased everything from then on a great rip of the ball by replacement centre W Bynon ( M John retired hurt, knock to the leg) saw him run in under the post unapossed M Bean converted 13-12 further pressure was placed on the home side and no 8 h Griffths scored near the posts to see a futher con by Bean to make it 13-19 at half time.

The coaches seemed a much happier  crew after this and the Tyrchs carried on with some good attacking stuff at any opportunity and our best try of the day from prop T Mullins saw him finish a move that started well into our half  with a lot of inter passing Mullins ran in from about 25m to score the first of his two tries Bean Con 13-26, again the ball was being sent across the back line and Mullins scored with no one at home

No 10 H Williams kicked the con to see the final score of 13-33 well done to all the squad keep this up for the game next week at home.

Sat 20th Sept

Good home win against Heol y Cyw to sercure some 4 points in the league, as I was at a wedding unable to get more info on the day except M Bean scored the winning try. Well done the Tyrchs

Sat 27th Sept

Although we lost 31-32, the boys played very well or so I am told, I write this from some 3000 miles away in South Woodstock Vermont.

Sat 4th Oct

A further excellent win 27-7 for the Tyrchs, again no more info as still away, I am told that 4 tries were scored again, so securing a bonus point for the league.

Sat 11th Oct

Away to Porth and up against a much bigger pack than we have seen so far this season, the tyrchs were missing some keys players in certain positions and it told in the end with non-contested scrums being an opition taken by the coaches later on in the game.

Porth came out of the starting blocks with everything geared towards the Tyrchs line, many a dropped pass or a knock on stopped them scoring, also I may say some very determind tackling by our boys, which after all of the pressure from the home side placed on us for first 30 mins, it was only 3-o to them. A kick and chase up into the home 22 saw ball stolen and a good try by G Eyres in the corner with a conversation by M Bean from the touch line this was followed by a penalty and saw the Tyrchs 3-10 up at half time, much against the run of play.

The second half was much the same treatment from the heavier Porth Pack with a resulting  penalty try award by the referee 10-10, three further penalties followed for talking back  to the referee and other silly misdemeamours which cost the Tyrchs a league point.

These are things that we must stamp out for the future, as it will cost us games for silly reasons. This includes supporters as there is a club code of conduct that we have signed up to , so lets give the referees some support every week, that said lets now look forward to Llantwit Major away next week and a much improved preformance by all.

18th Oct

A different day and a different additude by all concerned, after a lot of pressure by the Tyrchs the home side conceded a try by the very busy srcum half for the away side C Moss from a break by captain J Steel, who had an excellent game a couple of penalties and conversation byMark Bean made up the score, there was a much bettter game plan in place for this game and it showed, we still need to look at the break down as we are still giving lots of penalties away. The referee left all, at times very confused on his law interpretation, but to come away with a win at the current league leaders was a great bonus for the club, well done to all concerned and it was good to see club captain J Steel back in action after a lot of working weekends away.

Nov 1st

Home to league leaders Abercwmboi 2.30pm KO, they started as they carried on with wave after wave of attacking rugby we were 7 points down in as many mins, only for us to draw level with a T marley try con M Bean, after they had lost their scrum half (red card), we could not match the abercwmboi forward pressure and we concided a further 4 tries to see the end score 7-35, much room for improvment from all of the team.

Thurs 6th Nov

A friendly against a development xv from UWIC saw a very much more conmitted preformance from all concerned, they would have scored about 4 or 5 more tries if the ball hand gone to hand, both sides run the ball at every chance and the all round preformanace of the Tyrchs saw the end result of 17-7 being a fair one on the night.

Sat 15th Nov

Home in the Plate competition of the Swales cup against Barry which with quite a few changes to the side, saw the Tyrchs romp home 29-0, a much improved preformance by all involved, tries from  a penalty try, S Cole, G Eyres, D Ince and a good kicking day from M Bean with 9 points, hope the draw next week is kind and we can progress to the next stage of the competition.

Sat 6th Dec

A further win and bonus points for the Tyrchs away at CHSOB, 4 tries scored and those who were there say it should have been a lot more, well done the Tyrchs

Sat 13th

We were supposed to be home to Dowlais, then came the overnight raqin and the fixture secs decided to reverse the fixture and we travel to the Dowlais club to paly on  a cold day, but the play was all one way in the first half with the heavier Dowlais pack doing everything bar scoring, but a fine try by stand in wing J Annetts (normally a no 5 or 6) and a penalty by the home side saw  3-5 score at half time, The Tyrchs took all the pressure again in the second half but the defence stood tall and we went on to see the up and coming second row James Cashin scoring his first senior try and  a further try by Joe Annetts + a con by H Williams saw a well deserved 4 league points added to our total.

Sat 20th Dec

Home to Llantwit Major in the Swalec Plate competition 2:30pm KO, Weather was as thought by all a bit more than misrable, but a spirited preformance by all concerned kept the referee busy in the first half with lots of yellow cards,  the game was fairly equal upto the half time, and the score being 6-10 in favour of the visitors was about right, Second half was a much better preformance from the Tyrchs and a couple of tries from T Marley and a spritied run in from prop T Mullins more or less sealed  the game, if Beanie had his kicking shoes available instead of his slicing wedge, it could have been a score to reflect the pressue placed on the visitors in the second 40 mins, a break for the christmas period will see the Tyrchs start the 2009 eliment of the season away to Taffs Well  away on the 3rd Jan.

Jan 3rd

Taffs Well away in the league 2:30pm KO cancelled frost

Sat 10th Jan

Senghenydd at home and with one of the youngest sides fielded by the club for a long time, the Tyrchs made the 40 - 3 win at times look a struggle as many dropped & forward passes and fumbles  would if they had gone to hand seen a 60+ points win. tries by G Eyres 2, D Ince, S Cole, H Williams & H Griffiths saw us home with some fuel left in the tank. M Beans 2 pens & 2 cons capped a further good game for him. M Thomas (44) was most likley the oldest capt we have fielded for the first xv, well done Mogs and many more games to follow.  Our youngsters will keep the club on the right track as there is lots of talent showing through every game they play in, nice to see the structure of the club working at it's fullest, as there is lots of talent waiting in the wings to come up to the seniors XVs over the coming years.

Next week ,we at Tonyrefail and a further bonus league win would be good  as we can maitain our push for the top places in theleague, the following week we are back at Tonyrefail again for the SWALEC plate comp as a win on the 24th would see us in the last 16 for the plate.

Sat 17th Jan

Well a game the coaches will not forget, as with one of the seasons lightest packs out on the park, we made very heavy work of the possession as we dominated the  game for 70% yet the home defence and our wish to keep the ball tight, saw 3 penalties by M Bean get us the win with the last kick of the match to a penalty try by the home side in the last 2 minutes and luckly for us they kept the ball live rather than kick it dead, giving Beanie the match winning kick at the end.

Heavy going, a narrow pitch not playing our normal game will make the coach rethink the match next week.
